Bento Box M390 PM2 Re-Release on July 19th

#1

Post by steelcity16 »

So the Red G10 M390 DLT Trading PM2 Exclusive re-release drops on July 17th for $159.25 with free shipping and rewards points.

Bento has their re-release of their Smurf Blue G10 M390 PM2 exclusive dropping 2 days later for $30 more ($189.95) plus $14.99 shipping.

So basically you can wait for 2 days to pay a ~$45 upgrade for blue scales...lol. Good luck with that BBS!! :D

I guess I am missing something. These are supposed to be sprint runs right?

I thought that meant Sold Once then done.

Looks like this is no longer the case.

If this is the case then that is fine by me never liked the idea of sprints anyway.

As for the price difference not discussing shipping as we all know how BBS is and have beat that to death and back to life again, but people will pay a premium for that Smurf Blue color. It is just well dare I say... Smurfy! :)

Dealer (or distributor) exclusives, not sprints. Dealer/distributor usually has option to order another run after the first, as well as exclusive right to order that particular color/steel combination for that model.

This is the third or fourth run of the blue/M390 PM2, for example. I think there's been about that many of the brown/S35VN PM2 as well, though that one's a distributor exclusive.

Omg. Fourth run. I've already got one, but in my view this is even bigger news than the DLT.

Well the red PM2 won’t be in stock after two days. If you miss it, have fun paying $250.

Bento does things their own way. We’ve hashed it over so many times. It’s old news. Let it go.

I wonder if the BBS re-release will include the crooked branding on the ricasso?

Has this been an issue on previous runs? I assume you're not referring to the usual PM2 "Spyderco/Steel" etching that's not parallel to the plunge?

It will be interesting to compare the sell out times of each ... I suspect the difference will mostly be due to cost and not color.

I'm likely passing on both. But reality is they will most likely be gone before I'm free from work.

Please sell me on Smurf Blue. I have wanted to buy Smurf Blue but I just cannot convince myself that it is worth the price.

Bento sells ONLY Spydercos. Those other dealers carry dozens of brands. DLT also does exclusives with other manufacturers like Buck and Victorinox too. So maybe their profits can be made on other stuff they sell and allow them to sell this run at a lower profit than usual. Whereas Bento only sells Spyderco and doesn’t have a massive inventory. So they have to make a worthy profit to justify their investment on an exclusive run that may sit for months, or years even(Domino). Or maybe they just didn’t get as good a price as DLT. Just trying to see both sides.

ETA: DLT msrp $245 35% discount, BBS msrp $217 12.5% discount. Stock PM2 $216 msrp.

I would consider paying a premium for the blue, which I like. But I'm not going to pay that premium PLUS their exorbitant shipping costs.

If I understand it correctly, the BBS msrp is that low because the contract with Spyderco likely wasn't updated on subsequent orders of the old PM2 exclusive configuration. How long ago was the BBS Smurf blue first available? I think the current msrp is probably from back then.

January 2012 for the first run.

I'd personally rather see Knifeworks re-run the CF/M390 (or the green g10/204P if you don't want the CF markup). Nothing against BBS -- they've got great taste in their exclusives, I have an M390 PM2, M390 Delica, 204P Domino, and no issues buying -- but you have to admit KW is a bit more reasonable on the pricing/shipping.
