Well since no body mentioned this I'll throw it out there. I use Kroil. I even bought the special little applicator for it. But it's a nice light oil that I prefer to others that I've tried. It's kinda reddish in color and smells ok. And lasts a good while. It's my preferred oil at the moment.

Thanks for following up on the Mobil 1, D.

I’m a little surprised how little gunk has accumulated. It obviously stays fairly well put and doesn’t migrate as much as some of the lighter oils. :)

That’s very interesting marty. :)

I have a tin of Kriol and find it to be an excellent penetrant. I’ve also mixed it with colloidal graphite and used it “breaking in” new rifle barrels but I’d never have guessed it also had good lubricity and can’t help but think it would migrate and possibly end up where you didn’t want it to be.

This was also my biggest surprise. I don't think there's any question of whether it will lube or not but I was surprised to see it really didn't leak out beyond where I put it and despite being a wet lube it doesn't seem to attract lint. That knife has been carried literally everyday since the last post I made in this thread so it has had plenty of pocket time. I think it will be my lube of choice on knives that can't be taking apart.

If you want a real nano lubricant look into Archoil AR-4400 lp. It's an amazing knife lubricant and uses nano Tungsten Disulfide suspended in PAO synthetic oil. It's non toxic and all that as well.

I’d say we’re on the same page with lubes and can’t see how you could possibly go wrong particularly with Mobil 1 staying put and not attracting lint. The only concern I have, I wonder if it may have the potential to stain certain scale materials?

Just a thought D, do you have any discarded FRN or G10 scales you could use to see if it does stain?

I've got some lighter gray G10 I'll see what happens. I thought one of the benefits of G10 was that it was very chemical resistant so I'm not sure what to expect. I would be more concerned with using something like transmission fluid, that stuff will eat paint off a car door.

Hydraulic oils are pretty nasty. They are also generally hydrophilic, and can absorb through the skin. I’d avoid them like the plague.

I tried many things. I used baby oil for quite some time, then Ballistol, mineral oils, silicon grease and now grease made by Liqui Moly "Schmierfix".

I use my folder to prepare food / eat that's why I came to prefer grease over oil since its less likely to come in contact with food. Not sure what's inside "Nano Oil" but it implies something one shouldn't eat :D

I also started using the grease to apply a light coating on areas that could possibly trap water for a longer periods of time such as the space between liner and scale. Since the grease rejects water it should prevent contact with the metal surface and eventually leave. Not sure how effective it is since I did not have rust issue before but it shouldn't hurt.

I use Vaseline on my carbon blades and I don't worry too much about food prep. The guy who invented (more like discovered) Vaseline believed in it so much he ate a spoonful a day and he lived into his 90s.

I'll use the Nano Oil that I have on knives that can't be taken apart, just since I paid so dang much for it but once it's gone I'll be using motor oil. Knives I can take apart are getting Phil Wood grease.

Don't have a carbon blade but I would do the same or use silicon grease. Vaseline has a low melting point of 38-58 degree Celsius which could cause it to melt if cleaned with hot water though.

Further, white vaseline has been tested and proved to be non cancerogenic.

Hey Coffeetron, silicon grease works well on O-Rings and the like but I don’t think it works too well on much else. It tends belay a folders action and I serviced a spinning reel with it many years ago and it felt like I’d filled it with molasses.

Hi,
I agree. Its not meant to be used for moving metal objects. I mainly use it for the gaskets in my watches or the moving rubber parts in the car.

On the other hand, I read that it should be "food safe" which would make it a good material to coat carbon blades or blades with mediocre rust resistance in humid areas or water. Acc. to Wikipedia it is used for underwater use this way.

My main priority for folders is to minimize metal wear from the moving parts and coat parts from direct water contact inside a folder, not the smoothest opening action. Not sure how much of a difference the grease makes but it gives me piece of mind.

The Schmierfix I use is not listed on the Liqui Moly US website but its similar to their long-life grease with MoS2, the former being transparent. I am sure there are tons of similar products for the US market.

Hey D, I chased up some Phil Wood grease locally so I’ll grab some eventually as a man can never have enough lubricants. Ah, hahaha! I bought some Nano Oil 10W too.

For what it’s worth mate, I serviced my new Advocate and had intended to lube it with Nano Oil but old habits die hard. ;)

I lubed (sparingly) pivot pin, bearings, thrust washers and filled the the indent hole in the blade with Ace2 grease and couldn’t be happier. I’ve got no discernible blade play at the tip with lock disengaged and the blade drops like a guillotine.

Best of all I can’t hear or feel the bearings rolling or detent ball dragging and the blade flips beautifully. Not too sure I could have done the same with Nano Oil.

Nearly forgot ... the lanyard tube is captive between the scales and if I shook the knife to my ear I could hear it rattle (Connor commented). Anyhow, I used a little Ace2 in the pockets that hold the tube too and for now at very least, it stopped the rattle. Amazing stuff grease! :)

+1 on motor oil... ATF works good too. I don’t know about bearings as I don’t have any knives with bearing pivots. But if it’s on washers, engine oil or ATF has worked for me.

I just use whatever I already have handy. Usually it's 3in1 or Remoil. I've veen known to use motor oil or ATF too.

IMO, knives are incredibly simple machines, and are not subject to harsh or demanding conditions. Practically any oil will do a reasonable job of slicking up the action and keeping corrosion at bay.

I don't think it comes in a smaller sample size. I got mine from their store on Amazon.

Guys I'm serious, just give Victorinox MultiTool Oil a chance, its dirt cheap, food grade and it adheres to metal surfaces like nothing I tried so far. I used it last time about 1 week ago on my Manix Maxamet, knife was used daily and washed with hot water a few times a day, yet even now, over a week later, water just flies off the blade without even adhering to it due to the oil film still being there. I'm very impressed and as I said before on this thread, I don't think I'll ever use something else.

Nano oil also worked well but the price is exaggerated imho, and I'll take it with a grain of salt the maker's statement that its food safe, unlike the Victorinox one which is approved by the European Commission as actually being food safe and the ingredients being listed publicly.
