How many wharnecliffe spydies have there been?

#1

Post by silvershade255 »

The question came up elsewhere, and thought I'd ask here. I could think of these.

Yojimbo, ronin, dragonfly, delica, endura, salt 2, McBee, equilibrium, gb air, urban, centofante, spydiecard, dogtag folder, swick, and q ball.

More than I realized, but what are the others?

There is a whole world of rescue knives that seem to be wharnecliffe. Rescue, d’allara rescue, ukpk rescue, autonomy...
Also, spin, des horn, spydercard, toad...

Viele (C42 and C97). The Centofantes include the C66 Centofante 4, and the C25 and C50.

The Reverse fixed blade and P'Kal folder are quasi-wharncliffe blades. They both have a slight inward curve to the edge, so they're not true wharncliffe blades, but they're close.

A wharncliffe has a pointy tip. A bunch of the knives mentioned here are sheepsfoot. Of course there is a grey area in the middle. Also, a wharncliffe has a straight edge and some of these knives have a slight belly.

Yojimbo, Centofante4, all the Kiwis, Des Horn, Ronin, Bradley Air, Delica Wharnsliffe, Endura Wharcliffe, Dragonfly Wharncliffe, Salt2 Wharncliffe, Spin, McBee, Q Ball, Urban Wharcncliffe, Swick 1&3 and probably some more. These all have straight edges and acute tips capable of detail work.

"Wharncliffe: A blade shape in which the point of the knife tapers downward from the spine to meet a straight cutting edge at the tip."
The straight cutting edge was always a big defining characteristic of a wharncliffe blade for me, personally.
