Bulk Pre-Order

#1

Post by Dazen »

I don’t know if this has been covered before, but I couldn’t find any info.

Is there a way for us to do a bulk pre-order directly through Spyderco or even one of the dealers. We could all vote on a model in a configuration through poles on the forum, then pre-pay for the model and wait. For instance a PM2 Cru-wear/Micarta.

I say this because of some of the difficulties getting a model in a configuration one wants. I guess it’s like ordering any custom, that we would all vote on.

What are y’alls thoughts.

Yes the idea has been floated here before. I believe the consensus was that there aren't enough forum members to cover the cost.

The dealer would also need to deliver internationally since so many on the forum are not USA based

Given Spyderco's general willingness to go above and beyond to please their most loyal customers, I'd imagine that if something like this was a possibility, it would have happened by now. To my knowledge, it has not. Seems to me, this would be a logistical nightmare and is unlikely to happen..

That said.. if it does, I'm in.

I would be very impressed if you could get 20 people to agree on a model, color, and steel.

Yup, the problem is not getting enough people to participate but rather getting enough people to agree on a model and its configuration.

That said, a Cruwear/canvas micarta Para2 would be an easy sell. A very easy sell. I’ll take one! :D

I'm in for a tennis ball yellow g10 para 3 in lc200n and dlc coated blade. Surely with 25k members there's other lunatics like me.

Edit: I'm flexible for a banana yellow.

I've been asking for this exact combo for ages in other models. Neon yellow G10 is out there...

Out of that 25K, more than half were either spammers or only came here once or twice and lost interest. Another fairly large group are folks who were active at one time, but have not visited the forum in years. The number of currently active members is probably well under 5K. I'd actually be surprised if it was greater than 2K and would not be terribly surprised if it was under 1K. Then you run into the "I'd buy it if" factor, where no matter what model, steel, handle material, handle color, blade finish, edge type is proposed, many of the potential buyers won't want that exact combination.

Who gets to collect the money and place the order? What happens if that person opts to take the money and disappear? The past forum knives have been on Spyderco completely. They say what it will be, they make it, they sell it, they take all the risk. If it doesn't sell, they are stuck with it.

Picking the "right" model would be the trickiest part: I know that if I like a model I would be open to all sorts of variations (colour, handle material, steel)... but if I don't particularly like a model then I wouldn't even care about the rest.

Which means that for the pre-order to be a success we would have to choose one of the most popular models a.k.a. the usual suspects (Para 2, Para 3 etc.), and there are already plenty of sprints for these.
Time is a great teacher. Unfortunately, it kills all its pupils.

Make them a regular dealer. Maybe DLT, BladeHQ or Knifeworks. If they had 500 of them pre-sold, they'd almost certainly be willing to take a chance on the rest of the MOQ.

All good points. What is missing?
We are missing pm2 and para3 salts.
Micarta might be back on the menu.
We are missing impractical combinations like a Super blue manix. Japanese steels in USA, etc.

Otherwise, we could call for some popular combinations in new models like the grey and black 52100 knifeworks manix in a para3. That would be nice. I’m sure people want the red dlt in other models.
Otherwise, new customers want access to long gone sprints.
