Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
Hi,
First, allow me to express my appreciation to your customer service.
I spoke, I believe, to a woman named Candy, regarding a clip for my Sage 3.
Some weeks after sending an email with the details, I received the clip (in Israel), together with screws, and a separate bag with some loctite.
So, thank you Candy and Spyderco for the assistance. Much obliged!
My predicament -
One of my spydies needs some love.
What it looks like if you live abroad, is -
- You can use an international check(??) or an international money order (Western Union? Not sure what it entitles).
- You can go to the funky part of town and trade some of your local currency for 5$, to put together with the knife. That is, if you have a change in your town.
Using paypal for sending a payment, I would go through -
- 2-3 mouse clicks
- Filling in an email registered with paypal (eg CustomerService@spyderco.com)
- Filling in a sum considering paypal's commission (eg 5.25$)
- Another mouse click
The fee is mostly a formality (sweet). Is it feasible to ask of Spyderco to implement a simpler method for passing it?
Cheers and love,
Eli

Paypal is the best platform I'm aware of.
You don't need to (re)input your credit card data. You can supply information about your payment (eg "reshipping fee for a knife of type X sent by Y from address Z with tracking number XXX"). It's globally trusted.
The 5% commission they take is borderline filthy, but paying +25 cents is more than worth it for someone who lives abroad IMO.
Basically, the relevant person in Spyderco can open a paypal account with a respective email, or use an existing one, and that's it. Spyderco can start receiving 5$ payments, coming from 5.25$ payments sent by willing customers.

I guess if you were way out there finding US currency could be tough but here in Canada slipping a fin under the clip and sending it works well.
Re: Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
Another option is to request Spyderco send an invoice for the total amount owed ?
Re: Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
It looks like the current Spyderco Online Store doesn't accept PayPal, and I assume maybe they have their reasons for that as many other vendors also do not. (Some don't like the fees, some don't like the policies, etc.)
That said, I do always appreciate when vendors DO accept PayPal as a means of payment as it is very convenient for the customer.
In the case of warranty work, it would be nice to be able to receive a PayPal invoice from Spyderco which I could then just pay with a few clicks to cover shipping, materials, etc. For international customers, it is very nice that PayPal automatically does the currency conversion as well.

Yes Paypal is much more convenient for those of us who live outside North America.
I was lucky enough to score one of the awesome old school chef knives made by Masahiro, in the raffle Sal ran a little while back.
When making my donation to the Colorado Children's Hospital, I ended up (after contacting Sal's very helpful PA) making the donation directly to the hospital and sending a screenshot to Spyderco.
It was no problem, but I was a little surprised that I couldn't just Paypal the money directly to Spyderco, so they could pass it on in one lot.

Hopefully it works out. I’m 100% behind this idea. I tend to use sites much more often that accept PayPal.

This is awesome.
What other knife company do you state your trouble in the forum, and the CEO says he'll take care of it?
Cheers.

Awesome, thanks.

Apple Pay is another option that would give you smooth, easy functionality (even better than Paypal). I always appreciate Etsy, which surprised me by being _much_ easier to pay on than either Amazon or eBay, because I'm an Apple Pay user.

Re: Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
I'd prefer something not locked to a specific overpriced-and-basically-evil hardware platform if the goal is to make payments easier for overseas customers. At least Google Pay works on any web browser.
I'm sure most of these payment processors are offering downright lousy terms for service providers like Spyderco, but if they'll consider it all of us in far-flung places will really appreciate the options.
FWIW, on paper, TransferWise looks like the best provider for money transfers and e-commerce among global users in under-served nations, but I don't know anyone who actually has used it. PayPal is nearly everywhere, even if their terms and policies are a bit hard to swallow.
Re: Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
Hey, any news? It's a bit more pressing getting US cash from exchange offices in big cities these days :)
Re: Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
Hey, Kaz:
Unfortunately, nothing new to report. I know it seems to be something simple, but for a business, it's a bit more complicated.
We haven't forgotten, though, I promise. I'll see what I can find out.

Re: Return shipping fee - cumbersome to apply from abroad
Something that might be off is: I don't know if $5 covers the shipping fees if Spyderco has to ship international.
Sometimes the lowest shipping price can be more than that.
I imagine some international customers would get stuck with a percentage import tax when it comes back to them. (I don't know if you can exclude it if it isn't a purchase?)
