The Extended Native Family

#1

Post by RamZar »

Personally, the Extended Native Family includes the following along with their blade lengths:

  • Lil' Native: 2.45"
  • Native: 2.95"
  • Shaman: 3.58"
  • Native Chief: 4.08"
I like the whole series due to the overall narrow width since the blade hole is subdued, blade shape and the ergos are great. I’m sure others like them for other reasons as well.

The whole series covers all the various sizes but I think it would’ve been more prudent to go with the following blade lengths (especially the last two) due to local restrictions:

  • Lil' Native: 2.49"
  • Native: 2.99"
  • Shaman: 3.49"
  • Native Chief: 3.99"
Additionally, offer all four models in both Compression Lock and Back Lock.

Police officers that really want to nail you will include from the tip all the way to the base of the hilt, even if there is no blade for the last inch. So we would have to have the following requirements assuming a half inch choil sharpening area:

- Lil' Native: 1.95"
- Native: 2.45"
- Shaman: 3.08"
- Native Chief: 3.68"

But now we have a problem with those that are close to the inch mark:

- Lil' Native: 1.95"
- Native: 2.45"
- Shaman: 2.95"
- Native Chief: 3.49"

Blade length is defined as follows:

“Where a statute, regulation or ordinance refers to knife blade length, the measurement shall be the straight line extending from the tip of the blade to the forward-most aspect of the hilt or handle.”

I don't think it would take much modification to bring the chief down to your preferred size.

This. Five minutes with a belt sander and you're legal.

Personally, what I really like in your idea is a backlock-Shaman...
Concerning blade lengths I am always for the longest possible in a certain handle, but that's of course very selfish, for there are no restrictions where I live...

I am still stunned over how good that Native Chief looks.

Nice.

Where does the Tatanka fit, I wonder.

I am always shocked when I read these threads. It's kind of unbelievable to me that there are such strict knife laws in so many communities. You can walk down the street and find dozens of objects to do harm to someone with if you really have the intent.

I happen to live in a state where the edge is defined as the sharpened portion of the blade, but I'd say it's up to the user to make sure they're carrying in accordance with their local laws.

Changing those local laws is what supporting knife rights is for!

That was exactly my first impression too! IMHO it’s the best looking Native yet and I love how Spyderco takes order models and improves them. Well done spyder crew! :)

The measurements that your suggesting for the native, shaman, and chief are awfully close to law limits. Say the law was 3" and your knife is 2.99", you could run into a cop having a bad day that measures in their own way making your carry illegal in their judgement

Don't forget the two models that started it all, the BlackHawk and the Renegade.

Thanks, Paul. Absent your deep history, this forum would only be half as fun.
