Why is the compression lock on my sage different from other comp locks?

#1

Post by lonerider1013 »

Recently got the sage with compression lock. love it but I've noticed that the lock operates slightly diff than the comp locks on my pm2 and para3.
On those I can depress the kock when the blade is closed, freeing it to swing it open. But on the Sage, the lock appears fully compressed when the blade is closed, pressing it it doesn't move. I can easily open the blade with thumb in the hole or by flicking it w/ my middle finger, but I cannot hold the lock down and swing it out.
I assume this is because the lock is made differently or has diff features, despite overall being very similar?
Anyhow, love the knife, one of my favorites so far, and the edge it came with is incredibly sharp.
But I am wondering about the lock and why it is different than other compression locks, any ideas? Thanks,

Because it doesn't have a pivot bushing and that's a good thing in my book. Comp locks + pivot bushing => blade play... unless they are machined with very tight tolerances. Very, very tight ....

P.S Eric said that they are going to use a pivot bushing with the comp lock of the upcoming lightweight Sage5 ...

The main difference is that the Sage 5 has an internal stop pin. One place where something could be preventing smooth action. Blade weight, compare to Para 3 or PM2, could be a factor.

Aside from that, it is like asking why one PM2's action is different from another PM2.

If you loosen the pivot screw ever so slightly it will probably swing free.

Evil D which side should I loosen or is there only one that turns?

I haven't had one apart but I would assume it uses a two screw/one pin design so you should be able to loosen either side. It shouldn't take much either and it can be a fine line between a free swinging blade and creating blade play do you may need to tinker with it a bit to get it dialed in. You may also want to give the pivot a little lube.

I have had two and both where the same way. My second one was slightly easier to close one handed but only with a wrist flip motion, not a free dropper. There are several disassembly videos on YouTube. One side is a ‘D’ shaped non spinning screw, believe the side that loosens is the non clip side but check a vid to be sure. In my experience with two different Sage 5s, it will require some good old fashioned breaking in. I’ve opened and closed mine thousands of times and hit it with compressed air and cleaned by disassembly a few times. Mine is night and day better than when I got it but not a free dropper. I’m very happy with the knife now and it’s one of my most carried. Just my 2 cents.

I've had two Sage 5s and they can be finicky to dial in. It took me a while to get the one I currently have set so the blade drops and I can easily close one-handed. It has a tiny bit of blade play but nothing I can actually feel while cutting.
