Seeking old FRN / FRCP / G10 / CF scales for destruction testing!

#1

Post by steelcity16 »

I've always been curious as to the durability of FRN vs. G10. And even more curious about FRN vs FRCP. And even MORE curious about Golden FRN vs Seki FRN.

Tons of people do tests on steels and knives, but not so much on the handle material itself. I'd love to do some destruction tests on the different scale materials without destroying my personal knives! :D

If any of you scale swappers have some leftover FRN/FRCP/G10/CF scales lying around that you don't mind sacrificing in the name of science, please let me know. I will do a bunch of tests and post up a video on youtube and start a new thread with my results for discussion.

Thanks in advance for any support for this! :D

If you scour You Tube there are videos out there. I remember one where a guy hammered a strip of G10 into something...can't remember the details. Another one a guy had a Ladybug Salt that he did all sorts of crazy stuff to before doing a giveaway.

It would be interesting to see someone make some type of screws and nails from FRN if it is possible and record how well they penetrate various forms of wood and other building materials.

Here is the closest I could find:

If some people step up with some scales i'll do my best to fabricate some screws by cutting threads with a die.

I'm open to any suggestion for testing. I just need some test subjects! :) There has to be a few people with leftover dust covered scales after upgrading to customs.

You could just buy some from bladeswelove.
+-$25 Yojimbo or Paramilitary 2
40 Spyderco knives in 11 different steels,
1 Byrd and 30 “others”

Hopefully some of the folks who have switched scales will dig their factory scales out of the bottom of the drawer and send them your way. I for one would be very interested to see some systematic testing of the different materials. I would happily send you some if I had them but I’ve never switched any of mine out.

At what level of heat/flame would G10 burn or melt? Being glass fiber based it is very heat-resistant to burning.

I could test this if people would volunteer their no longer needed scales for science! :D

I don't care enough to actually buy a bunch of scales. I'd rather spend the money on an actual knife. I just figured some people might have some scales leftover from swaps that they no longer want. It appears I was wrong.

The resin would be the weakest link, it probably wouldn't withstand any open flame.
