Very cool!

I get the feeling bd1 will be phased out across the board for bd1n.

is there anything conclusive about the differences between bd1 and bd1n besides an “n”?

That is seriously cool. Glad the bd1n is moving through the line. Won’t get this one but have an itch to try the alcyone in bd1n. Keep em coming!

The Alcyone is bd1... Did they announce a switch to bd1n for Chinese made knives that have bd1?

Nothing specific yet. But why would not change all of them?

I believe Sal has said the alcyone and polestar are underperforming sales wise. I wouldnt think a steel change would be profitable on those models. I am just speculating of course.

When I asked in another thread, Sal said that they weren't planning on moving the China made models to BD1N.

So far, edge holding is a lot better and corrosion resistance is up, as well. Some are claiming better than VG-10 but less than S30V on edge holding. Time will tell, of course, as the steel is more and more tested. But the harder users are liking it.

I already have a translucent blue BD1. I will think on the color once they become available. This might keep me from getting an Endela for a longer time as I really love the M2 LW knives.

Bummer. I don’t think it’s the knife design. Time to start lobbying for a similar design from different maker with better steel. Think we need more choil-less g10 knives. Maybe change to compression lock.

I posted an analysis in a thread awhile back that I did that showed that an Alcyone and Polestar in CPM-CRUWEAR would be less than $10 more than current BD1 versions based on the price differences between Golden Made BD1/Cruwear/S110V. If that was truly the case, I would think switching to Cruwear (and maybe back to a "normal" solid color Peel Ply G10 in something like Foliage Green) could be a huge boost in sales for these models. You are getting Spyderco quality with Cruwear blade and G10 for under $100. And the designs of those, like the Tenacious, are some of the best in the entire Spyderco lineup in my opinion.

I think they are trickling in. This post on FB was the first that I knew of one being in the wild. I knew they were coming, but not when. So, a little phone calling to the knife shops might be in order if you want one now (make sure they do not get confused between BD1 and BD1N, though).

When they do a steel change like this (or a huge CQI like going linerless on the Native) I really wish they would issue a new UPC and model #. I had a heck of a time trying to track down some of the old S35VN Natives after the switch to S30V. I bought probably 5 different Natives that were listed as S35VN and they sent me S30V. Even after emails confirming it as S35VN in some cases.

Maybe they are doing that for these Manix LWs. If not, you definitely want to talk to someone on the phone and confirm that they are shipping you the version you want.

Glad I got the BD1 a few months ago before the change. I have BD1N in the Para 3, so its nice to have BD1 in the Manix LW for variety.
