So back to the original topic.... soft M390.

Dave Warren of Tuya Knives is getting some positive attention today on Instagram. His company had been selling M390 advertised at 59-61. His company saw JcoolG19's HRC test numbers of their knives at 57 hrc and he called the factory in China and had them check. They confirmed that Kurts testing was indeed accurate and that their knives were testing lower than they thought. Perhaps a calibration error at the factory in China.

What's getting him the positive attention is his company's response. Not only did he apologize for the error, he is recalling all of the M390 blades and is going to have them re-treated. He also added that after listening to the community the new range for all M390 knives going forward will no longer be 59-61 but 61-62.

In reading the comments on IG, I can tell you that guy just got himself some new customers.
Thanks for telling everyone about this.

Do you think it possible to test CTS-204P, M390 and 20CV all in the same model? I can’t get over the difference and similarities. M390 being identical in use to CTS 204P But 20CV coming out so much sharper and I am talking fresh from the factory blades not any errors introduced by sharpening.

Another good test would be the Native Chief versus let’s say a PM2 in S30V this Native Chief came in sharp, I dulled it and brought it back sharp so much easier that other S30V knives I have already mentioned like the safe 5 for example.

Thank you.

As for my tag it is straight up Joe Friday.. only the facts.
I haven't tested any 204P, only one 20CV Manix 2 and I think three M390 from Spyderco. I can test anything, but somebody has to send them to me. If anyone needs something done, please contact Alchemy1 or Banter_247
here on the forum. I have so many packages, it gets hard to keep track of them all. I won't turn anyone away, all I ask is a little patience and return shipping.

I almost bought one of those Lionsteel traditionals. I want to believe that Lionsteel just botched that one. I really, really hope they didn’t target 51 HRC on purpose.
They are nice little knives! I don't think they are all that bad. I think they are probably having some QC issues. They can turn this around, and I hope they do.

I had a talk with Dave Warren today. Seems like a stand-up guy. He said it was Bohler China that did the heat treat. He even showed me certs. I can't really read them...they are in Chinese! LOL
He told me the owners at Tuyaknife ran down to the factory at 4am to test the blades. They made the decision to take all of their M390 blades back from the batch and replace them. If someone wants to keep the knife anyway, they have a choice of one of the lower end knives, like the Bruiser, for free.

While I as the OP welcome all conversation even going off topic the blatant advertisement for a company / maker other than Spyderco raises my Hackles.

I could give a ahem poop 💩 less about some person making Knives coming out of China. China gave as to be expected tough luck best wishes.

Please cease this line of advertisement. Thank you.

Spyderco makes a lot of knives out of China. All these posts have been on topic.

Absolutely right. Throwing mud at "China" as though they are some single uniform manufacturer of knives is ridiculous and naive.
There are all kinds of shops with all kinds of standards and one may be turning out excellent work (such as for Spyderco) and others
may be turning out junk. Every manufacturer in the US is not turning out products to identical standards.

I leave this in the hands of the moderators I am not here to play popularity contests with anyone let alone with Pelagic who wants laid off then starts again.

As for China in the works of Spyderco that is one thing try and stay on track this is another maker entirely being discussed.

Reading is fundamental please do try it.

Yep, this is a good point. I've seen some god awful USA made knives, even customs. Country of origin doesn't always guarantee a specific level of quality, though if I see made in china or pakistan, I'm inclined to expect less of the knife.

That being said, I've never used a Chinese made Spyderco that I felt was garbage.

Look man. We're all human and I was going through some personal stuff (death of a family member — I know Vivi will probably say I'm claiming to be a victim by saying this but I don't want anyone's sympathy) when I responsed harshly to some pretentiously arrogant posts a few months ago. What do you and Vivi want? To remind me of me deciding to take a break from the forums forever, in hopes that I leave permanently?

And I'll say this. While I had a temporary episode I was mostly a good poster offering a unique and knowledgeable point of view. YOU on the other hand, since the day you created an account have constantly have said things that are questionable in many ways.

I'll leave it up to you. Leave my name out of your mouth, or I'll instruct the mods to delete my account. Because I don't need to be here.

I agree. I just want to talk about steel and knives. I took a break from the forums and didn't expect to be antagonized repeatedly as soon as I came back.

Time to look in the mirror, quite often life and others gives back what is given.

Food for thought... or not.

I've used it a few times and it didn't seem like super steel.

I haven't used it enough to give it a real opinion.

Actually, I use S110V and S90V and Elmax more than anything else and I don't feel like I could cut 500 feet of cardboard with any of them before I'd be doing more tearing than cutting.

Come on guys, seriously... is it really worth demeaning one another over conversations about steels and heat treats that 95 out of 100 people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between anyways?? I know I've ruffled some feathers in this past, but it makes me a bit sad seeing it on the sober side. We're all here for the same reason, regardless of how we use, collect, etc our knives. It's starting to go overboard that a member feels uncomfortable being here
