Caly 3 gap between scales and liner

#1

Post by Forcite »

Hey Everyone,

I just picked up a Caly 3 CF in ZDP, second-hand of course. I looked it over and noticed there are some gaps between the CF scales and liners as can be seen in the first photo below (the zoom helps). The second photo of the opposite side which is free of any gaps. I was wondering what you guys and gals think - see the poll.

Don't get me wrong, I know this is likely just a cosmetic issue, but I've been lusting after this knife for awhile in no small part due to how much praise it gets for fit and finish.

If It helps, I believe the knife was manufactured 2012 or earlier since it has a hex cutout instead of TorxTM for the pivot.

Thanks!

Certainly there have been qc problems at that factory but this could be debris under the scales.

My Caly 3 doesn't have them, but a number of my other Spydercos from several foreign makers and Golden that have G-10 and CF scales over steel liners do. I suspect these materials are intended to be used in applications where the back not being perfectly flat would not be an issue.

I don't remember seeing any gaps on my CF Caly 3.5. If there are they're so tiny my 54 year old can't seem them lol. I'll try to remember to check tonight.

Thanks for all the input!

My edit to the original post has seems to have caused it to disappear since my posts need mod approval. Apologies if this thread doesn't make any sense for a little bit ;)

My Calypso has them. Doesn't seem to have any negative effect.

I checked my CF Caly 3.5 under my magnifying light and no gaps on mine. It's about as good as it gets.

There are no gaps on mine, either. That is what makes me think there is some debris under the scales.
