a friend’s find...

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

a friend of mine that i often talk to about knives approached me the other day with a knife his daughter found in the bushes by a river here in hawaii. i couldn’t believe it when he pulled this out...

by the time i saw it, he had already scrubbed it with an abrasive pad to remove most of the surface rust. i asked him if i could take it and clean it up for him and sharpen it.
as you see it now, it’s coming along nicely. i cleaned up some more of the rust, but i didn’t notice the pinned construction at first, which is making it almost impossible to get it all. (this is why the pins on the manix lw have got to go!)
i’ve also spent a considerable amount of time with it on the sharpmaker. it’s a real challenge for me because i’m not very proficient with serrations yet and this edge was way gone. you can still see chips in the edge even though it’s already come a long way.
anyway, this is also my first experience with vg10. i have no idea how long the blade sat lost in the bushes, but i’m impressed with how it’s lasted. it’s still hard to say for sharpening and edge retention considering the factors already stated, but i think it would be easier to restore if it were plain edge.
i think it’s really cool to find such a great knife. it’s even cooler that it is a discontinued piece of spyderco history. it actually makes me want an atlantic salt. i definitely prefer the ergonomics of this handle to the pacific salt, but i prefer the pointier pseudo-sheepsfoot and extra length of the pacific.
at the end of the day, my friend’s daughter is going to have a much better knife than he does. maybe he’ll finally up his game. hopefully, she hangs onto it better than the last owner and it lasts her many years. i’m just happy to get to be a part of the story.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Nice find! For some reason, I thought of this Silence of the Lambs quote:

Somebody grew this guy. Fed him honey and nightshade, kept him warm. Somebody loved him.

Nice find for sure!
I don't know what it looked like before, but it surely looks usable right now :)

I keep one of those in my car for emergencies. Very cool find though. As for the rust inside the handle. I'd just oil it and work the knife. Spray it with compressed air every now and then and repeat until it's clean oil coming out. Might not get every bit of rust out but it'll help in the long run. For sharpening I'd probably skip the 3 to 1 and maybe go 5-10 to 1 to get the chips out if you're using a sharp maker. I would try to make a burr so I know for sure it's getting to the apex of the edge.

Cool find, congratulations to your friend’s daughter, and good on you for getting it back in shape for her.

I usually use a bit of oil soaked cotton wool on a toothpick to clean out the blade channels of knives which can’t be easily disassembled. If there’s a bit of rust on the inside of the liners, you can wrap some fine sandpaper around a coffee stirrer or something similar, to get rid of the worst of it. Keep flushing with oil til it comes out clean, as said above.

A wire brush also works well to clean out the jimping and pivot area.

Good luck!

I always have one of these handy for jimping and sometimes cleaning any rust off blades. Usually doesn't scratch the hardened steel unless you really press hard.

Brass bristles are even safer; they won’t scratch steel.

Those serrations :( what is it about people who buy rescue blades that just destroys the edge?

Someone on here figured out an easy way to sharpen serrations and posted a video. After seeing it I found they are easy to sharpen.

Some 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a pen or wooden dowel would definitely speed up the repair of those serrations for you.

confession: i’m really struggling to get an edge back on this knife. i’ve been working at it on and off for a while now and can’t seem to sharpen serrations. here are the various tools i’ve been using.
Image
and here is a closeup of the edge. it was pretty beat up to start.
Image

any tips would be great. i started using the diamond rod because the sharpmaker medium was taking forever. the rod is working well to remove material and creat a burr, but i can’t seem to get the edge consistent or even smooth enough for paper. am i just being too impatient?
