Here goes my Manix 2 4V Tip

This is one of my "yard knives". Used it to cut bamboo and brush last Sat, nothing extreme, didn't stick the knife anywhere, didn't pry, etc., just what I consider normal use. When wanting to sharpen it this morning I found this. Not a huge issue and not unfixable, but surprising nevertheless.

I remember lots of comments about the saber grind having a stronger tip but I think it's the other way around. The FFG Manix 2 is pretty stout at the tip.

Yes, I did think so myself. I stand corrected. I think I'll use my FFG Cruwear Manix in the yard instead, going forward.

I believe that 4V is hollow ground, not saber ground, unless it is some 4V Manix I don't know about.

I am holding my hollow ground 4V alongside a FFG Manix, and yes that tip definitely looks thinner and more delicate than the FFG.

I am surprised on one hand -- but not on the other. I would expect 4V to hang in there better, but a yard knife, I would expect damage.

You say it is a "yard knife", so you have already decided it is a worker and something you are willing to sacrifice to damage of that sort. I would sharpen it out and keep using it as a yard knife. Keep that Cruwear manix for more refined uses.

Wow, that's why I would love to see more extensive use of H1, especially in Golden made folders. An H1 tip would usually bend. The Pacific Salt makes a great yard knife, but I would prefer something like a G10 Manix and Military in Salt form with H1 PE and SE blades. Those would be fantastic hard use/work/outdoor knives.

Agree ! So, would you grind away the top or the edge to fix the tip ? I'm leaning towards edge (makes the new tip stronger), what do you think ?

Yeah, this. I'd probably do a sheepsfoot for a quick fix that leaves options open for future modification if you change your mind.
