Re: Spyderco's Upcoming New Folder? Stretch Lc200N with FRN Navy Blue Scales?

I myself don´t know LC200N and am not particullarly interested, since I don´t need the total rustproofness it offers.

That being said: It seems to be such a popular steel, that I think a straight spine Stretch in LC200N would give this great design a "second chance". The VG10 Sprint was not the biggest seller as far as I know, might be because many people are "bored" by VG10 (not me!)?

The straight spine Stretch is a great PM2 alternative for those who might (sometimes or always) prefer backlock, FRN, thinner blade, lighter weight.

Why would new molds and lock designs be needed? They already exist.
The original post said "Fish-Scale Pattern". That would need a new mold.
Ah, gotcha. Missed that part.

That would be neat. But, yea, I can see that the cost of changing the scales wouldn't be on the table.

Heck, I just now tried it and I have been through quite a good deal of models.

It's a "LW", that has full liners AND a handle that pleases me, ergonomically.

Sal has mentioned in the past that the Stretch is not a top seller, so it seems unlikely that Spyderco would make a major investment in new molds and lock design.

Unless, I'm dreaming... Is this the matrix? :p :D
Someone else also mentioned improving the backlock to the same design as the Golden made models have now.

Yea, I went back and read it. Haha.

I'll be fine with just a plain old Strech. Plus, I don't care for the FRCP they use on the Golden models.

OK, I'll bite: what's the difference between a Golden-made backlock and a Seki-made backlock?

I don´t know what´s the difference technically tbh (and don´t think there is a real one)... but if you try lets say a Endura backlock and than a Native backlock, the former is great and the latter is "greater" ;) Seems like Golden backlocks are made even more precise and with even less tolerances. I feel they have less (=no) blade play and even a more "satisfying sound".

But, as said: I don´t know (and don´t think) there is a real technical difference (please correct me if I am wrong), while on the Chap backlock (Taichung) there certainly is (internal stop pin).

And to be clear: While I have had and tried many Seki backlocks, I have a lot less experience with Golden ones.

I remember a discussion about improved tolerances, improved geometry, and an improved spring. I tried to find the thread, but was unable to do so. Hopefully someone will post a link if they can find it.

Ok, thanks guys! The only Golden backlock I have is the Native and it's nice enough, but I don't really notice it as an improvement to the Stretch or Dragonfly backlocks I have. Maybe some are more discerning than myself. :-)

It is possible that you got better examples (RE locks) on your Seki built knives. I have heard from at least a few folks who have had experiences like yours with their Seki backlocks being as tight as the Golden models.

I have a small sample of 3 Seki knives, both of stretches have some slight vertical play in the lock. The V-Toku 2 model came with it and the Hap40 has developed some in use. My Dragonfly Hawkbill Salt is solid (but i haven't applied as much force to that in use (yet anyhow) as i would my Stretches. None of my 6 Golden backlocks have any play and all can be adjusted to drop freely without wiggle. This is merely an aesthetic/ haptic complaint about the Seki knives and certainly the locks are plenty strong and so far 100% reliable for my uses.

I'm not totally clear on all of this, but maybe because it is not public knowledge. It used to be that at least 3 makers in Seki built Spyderco knives. I have read that Moki built knives are stamped/ etched "Japan" instead of Seki. G. Sakai built knives are etched Seki City or some variation maybe with a hyphen? I don't know who the other one or more maker is. Presumably the Endura family are G Sakai built. Maybe the H1 Salts are also G Sakai built? I don't know about the fixed blades either?

I understand the vintage Moki built knives may have been more consistently "better built" (tighter lock tolerances, better fit and finish) than Sakai. (Not that we are ranking  -- all good, just different ;) )

If anyone with more knowledge is able to share that would be cool. I also understand that some of this is sensitive info and may be guarded.

Regardless all that, we are just fortunate to have all these Spyderco options. :D

(Edited for clarification)

Is the Caly 3 a Moki-built knife?

The shop I used to work at had a ZDP-189/CF Caly 3 that was just impeccable. Perfectly mated lockbar & spine, smooth operation, rock-solid lockup. Beautiful knife, and still on my list to pick one up some day.

Pretty sure the Caly line were Moki built. Sal dropped a bomb about a screw construction FRN Caly 3.5 -- he has a prototype built in Taichung  , but the project is on hold AFAIK.

Any experts wanna weigh in?
