i should've mentioned this also... regarding the dragonfly salt, i wouldn't carry it in my waistband, especially in the ocean. it's a small knife and is very lightweight. combine that with the fact that the wire clip (at least on my df2 salt) isn't very strong and sits too low on the knife for secure carry and i would say it's not a great knife to clip iwb during active adventuring. i have carried it secured inside the pocket of my board shorts and i think it's fine clipped to a pocket for normal, every day use, but not ideal for water sports in my opinion.
the native salt sits much deeper since it's a bigger knife. it's less likely to pop out unexpectedly and be lost to davy jones' locker.

I carried my Tasman IWB in the ocean. It is now at the bottom of the sea and/or beach somewhere. Never again.

Short serrated blades are less practical for most people's uses. Serrated blades are made for draw cuts. The dragonfly platform begs for a steel that excels at pushcutting. Unless you're like me and occasionally need toughness, I'd look for a model in LC200N.

i've never even had to adjust my pacific or native salt in the ocean. sorry you lost your tasman. :(

agreed.

i did have to use my se df2 salt yesterday to sharpen a pencil. the wider serration is great for this application and then the little bit of pe at the front of the blade finished the job off nicely. i will say though that i'd still have rather had a pe for the task.

It's a bummer. I really don't know how it came lose, I'm not the strongest swimmer so it wasn't like I was getting smashed in the surf and definitely wasn't playing beach volleyball lol. Oh well, I like to think someone with a metal detector will find it someday and be blown away that it isn't rusted.

Can't imagine the confusion that would cause, especially if it got weathered a bit so it didn't just look like someone had just dropped it that day. That guy would be telling everyone at work about the invincible knife he found.

In the past, I've read posts by some who stated that "H1 is not really a steel." That's not true; H1 is definitely a steel. Magnets stick to it.
Interestingly, there are stainless steels, apparently called austenitic steels, that magnets won't stick to. I encountered it on a friend's refrigerator with stainless steel exterior that magnets wouldn't stick to. The physics behind are beyond me, but Scientific American has a fairly readable article explaining magnetic vs non-magnetic steels - https://www.scientificamerican.com/arti ... s-work-on/ .

That's interesting... I wonder if it has anything to do with the high concentrations of chromium and nickel in austenitic steels sort of "diluting" the magnetic effect of the iron or if it's mostly the crystal structure like the article suggests... I kinda want to look into this now.

For anyone interested, this article explains it well: http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/ ... 746568.htm. To sum it up, the addition of nickel messes with the arrangement of the iron atoms in the steel's structure in such a way that their individual mini magnetic fields end up cancelling each other out.

Question for the Native 5 Salt owners, how easy is it to thumb flick open? My Pe dragonfly salt rocket opens this way. I’d be bummed out if I couldn’t easily do this with the Native.

Cheers!

I do love this knife but the LC200n is just so amazing. My spydiechef gets so much use. Would love to try out a native 5 salt

the native salt is not a clickable knife as far as i know. most people talk about a stiff action that is probably due to spring tension pushing the lock bar hard against the blade.

that said, i can’t really flick my df2 salt either, so maybe you’re aware of some magic that i’m not privy to. i also can’t flick my pacific salt with any degree of consistency. i don’t think back locks are meant to be flippers.

i’ve come to appreciate the slow, controlled opening of the native. i can still easily open and close it with one hand and it feels very secure and smooth.

I decided I'm going to pull the trigger on a PE Dragonfly Salt today. When it gets here, would you guys be interested in me doing a post documenting how the edge of the H1 wears during my day to day life like tonijedi's post?

I would be very interested.

Actually this thread (and tonijedi's) is starting to make me want to get some PE H-1 myself, to try out.

I had the DF2 Salt PE for about two years and then gave it away as a gift because I wanted to try H-1 in SE. so I got myself a DF2 Salt SE. I also have the Native 5 Salt PE.

The DF2 Salt, whether in PE or SE, has enough edge retention to work more than ok for normal everyday chores, in my opinion. SE lasts longer, though.

The LC200N definitely has longer edge retention than H-1 PE. But both are more than adequate for regular edc.

I can thumb-flick and Spydie-flick the DF2 easily. I can Spydie-flick the N5 consistently and I can thumb-flick it but not consistently.

Whenever it gets here (probably about a week or a little more, it takes forever for things to get shipped up here), I'll start a thread documenting how it does with factory edge, then after sharpening. I'll try to put it through a little bit of rough stuff too just to see for science, but I won't try to chop down any trees with it or anything.

Just in case it matters to you, as it does to some people...H1 scratches VERY EASILY with the simplest use performing daily tasks. As it sounds like it's going to be a user knife for you, it probably won't matter though.
