Spyderco Dice Lightweight - Who needs a Para 3 LW?

#1

Post by Sonorum »

Warning, picture heavy post!

When I saw that the Para 3 had gotten a weight reduction I thought that I should try something similar with one of my favorite knives, the Dice. It's a very nice knife, good size, fantastic steel, ok flipping action and great ergos for me. But it's a bit of a boat anchor. Official weight is 105 g/ 3,7 oz which makes it feel very dense. It's around 99 g/ 3,5 oz with the ebay deep carry titanium clip. I also never cared much for the plaid cf.

The original handle scale with titanium and g10 was 28 g/ 1 oz.
Image

I figured I could do without some of the hardware as well so I removed a standoff and its screws along with the lanyard tube. That was 3 g/ 0,1 oz. Everything helps!
Image

I just used a regular drill and a dremel with a router kit so it's not as exact as a cnc machine but it's good enough.
I bought a sheet of g10 which was as thin as I could get away with and still make sure that she screws held everything in place. About 2,6 mm/ 0,1 inch.
Image
Image

Rough shape. About 14 g/ 0,5 oz which is half of what the original weighs.
Image

Not perfect dremel router work:

Handle shaping:

Weight-check, 82 g/ 2,89 oz!
Image

Assembled with shaped handles. I'm going to assume that I sanded at least 1 g off when I shaped the handle so I'm calling it a final weight of 81 g/ 2,85 oz. A lot closer to one oz/inch.

It's not perfect and I still need to adjust a few thing. The flipping is 90% of what it was before but I need to deepen the washer cutout a little bit because the handles are not perfectly level. I think that might cause some uneven squeezing of the bearings or something.
It's been a fun project though! Finally the weight matches the size and use of the knife for me. I hope you find some of it interesting :)

That shaved off more than I thought it would. Nice to see someone making their own scale!

Would look better with the edge chamfered. I’m not sure how to do that easily though.

Better machines, more time. You could probably do it with a file or sandpaper over something flat. This whole thing took less than two hours so there are many things that could be made more precise and with more care. I had a bit of a deadline.

I thought the thin g10 would feel fragile but I've been cutting wood and cardboard with it today and it really feels solid. You can't squeeze or twist it like with say a BM Bugout or something similar. Nice surprise!

There's a reason the native 5 is going linerless.

Yeah I have one in FRN and it feels like you can't break it even if you try so linerless g10 seems good.

Very nice work!

I'm not a big Dice fan, but that's really impressive to see.

That is a super work, Sonorum.
I like my Dice as well, but don't carry it because of the weight, and the thickness of the handle.
I looked into doing what you did, but chickened out because the bearing race work.
So flipping is 90%, not bad.

Give it shot! You're not destroying any original knife parts so it 100% reversible :)

Hey, thanks for posting about your project on the dice. I have been carrying mine a bit since you did. Forgot how much I like this model. Poor thing found it’s way to the back of the drawer and hadn’t seen much action recently.

It is a really good knife and I wish they made a second generation with improved flipping and lighter weight but still with a good steel and exclusive titanium feel. No I can't shake it open, to much detent and to light of a blade.

Sonorum, thanks to you I was encouraged to lighten my Dice as well. I give you credit for this.
I didn't contour the G10, just sanded the course texture down a bit.

Super nice! Is it peel ply g-10?

I really hope the Dice and Domino patterns stay around in some form or another. They are good patterns that didn't come alive properly in their current form. Better action and a lighter weight would be the only improvements they need. Reaaaally tempted to but a Domino now if i can find one.
