Spyderco Pacific

I'm looking at this knife but can't decide between the plain blade and serrated. It's intended use is for fishing. Do any of you have a preference between these to blade types and if so why.

Welcome to the forum FLHTK!

I chose the serrated edge, because apparently H-1 performs best in that form. My intended uses were for general EDC but also for hard use as an outdoor/gardening knife. In that capacity is has no equal.

You will probably need to touch up plain edge H-1 a bit more frequently than SE, but if you're not using it super hard all day, even PE H-1 ought to last you a good while.

I guess my recommendation is, if you will be using this knife frequently for tasks like cutting brush, or prolonged hard use, go with the serrated version. If it's just going to live in your tacklebox and only occasionally see mild use like cutting fishing line, PE will be most likely be quite adequate.

Do you have a personal preference in edge type?

If you plan on cutting fishing line, SE is better in my opinion. If you plan on gutting fish, PE for sure.

If you're a fisherman, I vote for the SE Salt and the Waterway! Best of both worlds.

Excellent shot!

To the OP, I don't have experience with H1, but don't be afraid of serrations. I've used my Byrd Rescue 2 quite a bit as a primary blade and it hasn't let me down. Honestly, plain edge is my preference, but I will likely carry a plain edge and a serrated edge together for the foreseeable future.

Most "knife people" will tell you PE H1 dulls fast (read knife forums)
Many "normal people" will tell you PE H1 holds an edge (read Amazon's reviews).

PE H1 dulls faster than today's "quality standard steels", that's a fact. But it isn't butter soft and it's super easy to sharpen.

Both work great. Serrated will hold an edge a little longer, but either type makes a great pocket knife to keep with you every day. Can't go wrong eith either.

I’ve been going back and forth with this same decision lately as well. I went with SE and it’s on the way right now. I will most likely get a native salt PE to pair it with on the water. I have a SE Endura 4 that is a dedicated work knife and I can tell you there’s never been a time I wished I had a PE instead. Spyderco’s serrations are one of a kind, they increase the performance of the knife so much IMO. They can cut through **** near anything.

Let me put it this way, my friend. The Spyderco Pacific Salt, Serrated-Edge, is so toothy sharp, it makes tiger sharks pee tuna juice when they see it.

I have the SE Pacific and it’s an awesome knife. If you are using to cut up chunk bait the SE goes through a whole fish like a laser! All 5 of my H1 knives are SE.

I just picked up the PE Native 5 Salt LC200N so I’ll have that too.

I think if I had purchased the Pacific Salt SE or for that matter any one of the Salt Series of knives, as my first knife, I would have far fewer of other brands and types knives and would have a drawer full of Salt Series blades.
