Yojimbo Love?

Hey all I was checking out Instagram yesterday when I saw a modded Yo2 that I think checks a lot of the boxes of what some of us would like to see in a Yojimbo 3.

BINGO. A couple of fellow Yojimbo fans and I were admiring that pic when it was first posted and we were all thinking the same thing.

It is pretty sweet looking.

I like the knife 100% the way it is lock, stock and barrel, but would like a Carbon Fiber, with 4 inch 20CV Blade. Just supersize it!

Please do not make 500 of them as I will not be able to get two to carry. Make at least 2,500+ so there are enough to go around.

More graceful lines. 3/8” longer handle. 3.5” blade. .14” stock. A steel tough enough to give that awesome tip a fighting chance. K390 would be nice.

I watched a video where Mike said he wanted to make the original yojimbo 1 in a denim blue. I’d say just make that happen. Denim blue micarta with stonewashed blade and clip would be perfect. I like the blade and ergonomics and think that denim micarta and stonewashed would fit it well.

The Yojimbo 1 was made in black and blue, as far as I know.

In the video he says he wanted to get denim blue but when the yojimbo came out you could only get IBM blue g10 because they only made g10 in 4 colors.

Time and use is usually what refines a design to warrant an "upgrade". Mike had a lot of time between the Yo and the Yo 2 to see what he would change. I will say that Mike is always working on designs, and I don't want to say more than that. But as mentioned, what would you want to see in a "3" version?

The Yojimbo 2 is my favourite, most carried knife. I would only add a cerakoted black clip in lieu of the shiny silver one, everything else is as it should be, especially the lack of jimping.

Hey, Cheddarnut:

If you prefer a black clip, you can order a black replacement clip for a Para Military 2. I purposely used the Para 2 clip on the Yojimbo 2 so it would be compatible with all Spyderco and aftermarket clips made for that knife.

I've said it here before and I'll say it again, my Yojimbo 2 has the best action, fit & finish, and lockup of the 30 or so Spyderco's I own! If I were to change anything on mine.....maybe something other than the S30V steel? I don't dislike S30V, I just have a lot of it!

It's a fantastic, highly functioning, purpose built design!

Smaller grip to go with Chicagojimbo blade. Wire clip, Lightweight.

Maybe more closely resembling the original “Ronin” with respect to blade profile. Radiused edges of grip are nice. Also like both jimping on the Smock and Push button lock.

Since the Yojimbo 2 and the Yojumbo is primarily a self-defense design, TBH, the blade steel doesn’t really matter all that much for that particular purpose; it just needs to be able to serve its purpose one time, then it will be taken into evidence. It could be 8cr13mov.

Blade Steel can make a difference if the knife will be used in a utilitarian manner, however.

If I remember back that far correctly, part of the Yo2's changes were to make it more utilitarian and not just for SD, the thinking being you end up using the knife you're carrying every day. From that standpoint, dropping the steel level probably doesn't make sense.

Don't think there have been any comp locks coming out of China production yet either, so that would add a bit of complication.

Yes, I wasn’t seriously saying that the Yojimbo 2 should be made in China with 8cr. Nor would I want it to be. Just saying that, for strictly SD purposes, it doesn’t need to be a high-end steel.

For utility purposes, S30V is great. With the Yo2’s thin and narrow tip, S45VN would probably be a bit better, adding a *little* bit of durability (possibly a little less chip-prone), if that were an issue.

Mike, i just recently contacted the sfo regarding black clip replacements for a number of knives, including the C81bk used on the Yojimbo 2, Candi laid it all out for me. Also; Thank you for the sober, ergonomic masterpiece- it gives me a boost every time i use it. You've created something meaningful *bows to your mastery*

Sal, there are three things I would like to see happen to the Yojimbo series.

1. XL version. I'm not limited to a certain blade length where I live.

2. Different lock. I have much more confidence EDCing backlocks and CBBL.

3. Change the thumb placement. The thumb rest feels just a bit too forward. If it could be shifted back by about 2.5mm I think that would give a more ergonomic experience during cutting tasks, whether they are utility or not.

I don't expect any of these changes to align with Mr. Janich's vision for his design, but since you asked for input I wanted to offer mine.

I owned both Yojimbos and the Ronin 2, and currently only the Ronin remains in my collection. I like the extra blade length and the blade steel used on the Ronin 2, and there's no chance of it accidentally opening :)
