The Endela looks like a perfect EDC knife, pretty much. The Police LW is awesome, but would scare the bejeezus out of the people around me. The Dragonfly wharncliffe is probably even better for DFly-type tasks than the original. I have to admit that I don't get why anybody would need an Emerson Wave on a Dfly, though.

Four knives into the show, and none of them are outright weird, though. I hope all the wacky stuff isn't being kept under wraps.

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Small Efficient

#62

Post by Mr Blonde »

The small efficient is, simply put, a smaller version of the efficient. As is usual for Spyderco, the 'cockpit area' (the area of the knife covering roughly the pivot, choil and opening hole) seemed the same size. The blade and back of the handle are shortened to achieve a smaller version of the same knife, but with proper ergonomics. This small efficient was indeed a 'fist full of small knife'. It reminded me of the Dice versus the larger Domino.

I might be seeing this wrong but the small efficient looks like it would be a good ‘skinner’ and almost same as a fixed necker that I have

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Emphasis

#65

Post by Mr Blonde »

The Spyderco Emphasis is kind of a larger version of the Efficient. So with the Efficient, Small Efficient and the Emphasis, you got a nice trio of value folders. The Emphasis handled heavier but well balanced, compared to the Small Efficient. It also looked and handled a lot like another large G10 handled knife I get to show you in a later posts.

Spyderco 2019 Production Sample – Sage 5 Lightweight

#66

Post by Mr Blonde »

I made a rookie mistake when ‘judging’ the new Sage 5 Lightweight, I went by its looks. The new grip pattern looked different, and therefore a bit ‘wrong’. Then I picked up the knife, and ‘got it’. Are you familiar with the grip effect on the FRN pattern slipits, like the UK Penknife, Urban or Squeak? Did you notice how the pattern feel smooth when you move your fingers ‘up and down’ on the handle? And how it gets very tacky when you move ‘forward’ towards the blade? Imagine that effect times ten, and that is how this handle pattern feels -to me- on the new Sage 5 lightweight.

Eric shared at the meet how Spyderco wanted to make lightweight compression locks for a long time. It required the introduction of new polymers to make it a reality. A compression lock exerts a lot of force on the handle, and this new lightweight stuff can take it. Personally, I’m not the world’s biggest Sage fan, but I can certainly get into many other famous Spyderco compression lock folders in a lightweight format!

1.86 oz for the Sage LW? That doesn't seem possible. The Delica LW is 2.5, the Chaparral LW is 2.0. I guess both those knives have metal in the spine that the Sage hasn't got, but they also have less blade and less liner.

Noticed the g10 backspacer on the Small Efficient. Nice. On the Emphasis and Small Efficient I noticed just a single screw holding in the wire clip. Is this to reduce cost for these value folders or is this a new design of a press-fit threaded barrel for the clip screw? Similar to how the PM2 lanyard tube is press fit into the scales. Thank you Eric for the great new value folders which I'm assuming are your designs with black wire clips.

Furthermore the Sage LW has thicker stock than both the Delica and especially than the Chap... on the other hand, both of the latter have full (skeletonized) liners...

(EDIT: Just now realized, that the Sage LW also has full liners... so that weight just CAN'T be correct...)

Anyway, 1.86 would indeed be incredible light...

The P4 will be VG-10 as the other blades in the family. I'm also planning a K390 (midnight blue) and ZDP (BRG) versions in time.

Or, I measured inaccurately or I made a mistake. Please take my 'hand measured' specs as an indication only. I'm sure the catalog description will contain proper specs. :) ;)

Seems like it's getting harder to sell me a knife these days, but I'll be buying a few of those Police 4's.

Love to see some Amalgam sprint runs too.

Me too. Reminds me of the Sliverax, which is a good thing.

That Emphasis looks great. I have a feeling that the steel will be 8CR. I hope I'm wrong though.
