Waterway Lanyard Recommendations?

Postby Zatx » Mon Mar 25, 2019 9:16 am

I'm looking for recommendations for a lanyard to be used on the new Waterway. I need a way to provide retention so the knife can't be lost to the bottom of a lake when your leaning over the side of the boat to make cuts.

What do you recommend?

Thanks!

(BTW, I'm looking for options that I can purchase versus make myself.)

Paracord with a compression barrel lock, so you can snug it tight to your wrist. The only knife I have a lanyard on is my CS Recon tanto, this blade gets used for hacking and chopping pretty often and the lanyard makes it easier to know where the knife will end up if it comes loose (had it fly out of my grip once when hands were cold and gloved). Mine doesn't have the slider, as I didn't have one on hand when I made it, so I just spin the knife around to tighten the wrist opening, if/when the cord gets ratty I'll put one on the new lanyard.

Construction is as simple as threading the cord through the handle, putting the barrel lock on, tying a knot in the cord and then heat sealing the ends of the cord with a match... no special crafting skills required!

Hey Zatx, I sent you this message via pm before I saw this thread but I thought I’d post it here too.

Hey bud, that’s a question to which I’ve given much consideration. I have lost a couple of knives on the kayak and my first solution was to lanyard them to the kayak. I quickly stopped doing that after I had a mahi get my pliers lanyard wrapped around his tail, nearly knocking me out with them while he was thrashing and doing back flips in the kayak. That could have been deadly were it a razor sharp knife flying around. I have settled on using a very short lanyard (1”-2”) to attach a small float to the knife. I could still lose it in a heated moment or big wipeout but at least it keeps my knife from sinking to the bottom should it accidentally go overboard.

Thanks again, Lance. I just ordered the orange foam key chain floats frequently used for boat keys!

That’s a great idea!! When I’m snorkeling for scallops I have a dayglow bobber tied to the drawstring of my mesh fin bag. I set the bag on the bottom, swim around and pick up 8 scallops (1 between each finger-pair) and drop them into the bag. This has also solved the scallops trying to make a break for it, they don’t seem to swim up and out of the bag.

Hey man, what kind of float do you use for the Waterway?

Are you sure that will float a knife?

I use a oversized styrofoam bobber about the size of my fist. It takes a good bit of foam to keep a 5 oz knife afloat. It is a bit awkward, and definitely unsightly, so I use a lightweight clip as a quick release. I’ll jeep a short lanyard/fob on the knife and simply clip the float to that when I go offshore. When I get in I simply detach the float and leave it in the kayak.

Not a waterway (don't have one yet) but the Fish Hunter I use for kayaking is attached to the sheath by an extra long leather thong.
