Good thread! I am currently trying to decide between plain edge and serrated edge Pacific Salt. People dish on PE H-1 but as long as the edge holding is similar to 420HC or Aus 8 I wouldnt complain.
One thing that PE H1 and SE H1 share is the ease of sharpening. I like that a lot. If you have the sharpmaker it's so easy it seems almost impossible.
I agree! The serration pattern along with the triangle rods are so well thought out.

The tip of my H1 SE Pac salt will hold shaving sharp for about 2-3 seconds before a mild wind wears down the edge. Seriously, after cutting a foot of cardboard it will not shave. Maybe that is just the difference with a single bevel compared to a normal PE double bevel?
Are you cutting the cardboard against concrete? :D

Both my Pacific Salts, PE and SE,will shave at the tip longer than that.

This probably says more about my sharpening skills for a chisel grind then anything, but I just sharpened the 3/4 inch tip to my SE pac salt to a shave arm hairs (not split an atom sharp, there was a little pull when it shaves arm hair)

And, I got about 5ft-6ft into cardboard and it stops shaving. I will admit, I struggle to get great results on the small PE chisel grind

Day 4: as everything seems to be wrapped in plastic these days, that's what my knife cut today. I used it to trim some glass fiber net at work (some soft stuff).

There must be something wrong with my knives as I went to check and those that were H1 are still H1 and those that were VG10 still read VG10 on the tang... maybe I've to connect them to the internet for the upgrade?
Just pass the Ethernet cable through the Spydiehole. The steel gets updated inductively when you connect to the Spyderco Factory Outlet. The writing doesn’t change, only the molecular composition. It takes five minutes per inch of blade length.

i went with spyderedge because i planned to use the knife for aquatic activities. in the water, the most likely life-threatening issue you can run into is getting caught or wrapped up in something, so se made the most sense. also, i'll never need to make a pretty cut at the beach or in the water. for edc, i prefer a plain edge, but spyderedge works just fine for just about anything you need to cut. couple that with the longer edge holding and a knife that is still easy to sharpen, and it's kind of a no-brainer. if you need pe though and you don't need a blade that lasts a long time or has to do a lot in a short time, it's perfectly acceptable.

Very true. Spyderco serrations are amazing in their performance and their ease of sharpening makes them that much better. I really plan on using it as a summertime work knife (where I sweat 12 hours a day) and bring it to the beach and pool as well as my only cutting tool. Kinda like a substitute for my SE Endura. I’ll be following this thread a little while longer before I make a decision. Of course I’ll end up getting both I’m sure..

honestly, i had given up completely on serrations for many years of knife carry. i bought into the mall ninja arm hair shaving pristine phonebook paper slicing madness of the knife community that says serrations are unnecessary and get in the way. i only ordered my pacific in spyderedge because it was for the water and h1 is supposed to be at its best serrated. since then, it’s completely changed my mind. personally, i like to carry one of each because i find value and utility in each that can’t be matched completely with a combo edge. some jobs call for serrations and some call for a plain edge. i love my blacked out se pacific salt. it’s a wonderful knife in every way.

Day 12: a bit of cardboard and sharpened 2 pencils. Although the edge doesn't shave anymore I couldn't tell a difference from a freshly sharpened edge on today's tasks.

That is honestly 100% Sharpmaker too. No fancy Dremel stropping so far on this knife/steel.

honestly though, even with my serrations not being this sharp, they are perfectly usable for most applications.

That is one of the benefits of serrations, although personally, I like to keep my SE blades sharp enough so they don't snag when cutting.

I tried an experiment today. Used the brown rods on my Pacific Salt instead of fine or ultrafine. Got mine sharp enough to catch hair above the skin.

I'm excited to see how it does VS the fine edge I was using.

Me too. A toothy edge on a toothy edge. ;)
Let us know how you like it compared to the UF rods. (Which is how I typically sharpen my SE blades.)

I would expect edge retention to be better. I think I'm going to switch over to using just my Golden Stone just to see how good of an edge I can get with it. There doesn't seem to be a lot of definitive opinions of the Golden Stone yet.

Day 13: today I was installing shelves, blinds and some ikea stuff so the dragonfly cut a lot more than on other days. Mostly packages and some cardboard, sharpened one pencil and scraped some glue from a wooden board.

Day 14: 2 weeks carrying the Dragonfly. Today I used it again while working at home. It still slices recupt paper without a problem. Now I want a Salt 2 PE and a Pacific PE to go with the SE versions I already own.

you’re kinda making me regret getting the se df2 salt. nothing wrong with mine, but a pe df2 would’ve made a nice pair with my se pacific salt.
