G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
Re: G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
Just received my HH UKPK today. First, very pleased with HH communication and service, and delivery was just 1 week from order (free shipping option). This HH is my first UKPK, and must say I’m impressed. I had noticed a similarity to the Caly 3 prior, but having both in hand now has me convinced they definitely share a design language. Considering my appreciation for the Caly in hand, the UKPK feels and functions great right out of the box. Looking forward to years of enjoyment!

A drop point blade and brown G10. Superb idea. I hope HH are following this thread. I imagine it would sell like hot cakes. It would absolutely be on my must have list!Enactive wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2019 11:13 pmIt would be great to see more color and steel options in g10! If anyone from HH is reading, a drop point with brown G10 would be a nice nod to the Stretch!

Glad you finally got it it. I was beginning to think there was a problem? Also glad you like it. I think it's probably the best UK that the Golden knife-makers have built to date. I'm quite proud of them. If HH is wise, in my opinion, they will keep their option to continue the model. Maybe some additional variations in color or steel?

Ok....months after these dropped I've finally succumbed. It's been awhile since I ordered a new knife and I've decided that this one really is a must have for me. Order placed a few minutes ago. :)

Good for you Pat. If you love the UKPK...as you've heard, this one is a home run!! Anybody that passed on this the first time around, don't let it pass by this time!

I'm still ambivalent, but am willing to give the latest implementation of the split spring a chance, especially in a G10 scaled version.
Mine is leaving the UK today! ...with the exchange rate where it is now, I paid less than a used one went for on Ebay a few days back :D

Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks of these when they arrive.
Re: G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
One of the best knives ever made. Changed my blade out for a drop point, now they just need to make a drop point in something other than BD1.
Re: G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
I’m not gonna lie. I wish the blade was the same thickness as the original G10 ones. It’s fine how it is, but it really turned me off soon as I saw it was thinner.
- best wishes, Jazz.

For the price, you can't beat the design/materials and even S30V for the steel. Actually carrying mine today. No problem cutting through a fairly thick cucumber, broccoli crowns, tomato, pepperoncinis and chicken for my salad for the lunch today. Definitely was pleasantly surprised when I got mine that the blade length and cutting edge are longer than the Para 3. I figured they would be pretty similar knives overall, besides the lock/no lock. Boy was I wrong! Sorry Jazz...I love me that nice and thin grind!

I'd much rather have a thin grind on a small knife like this too.
I didn't realize this one has a significantly thinner grind than the previous G10 UKPKs. I'll have to compare to my orange G10 one when the HH red arrives. Should be soon.

It’s the same as the FRN ones for thickness.
- best wishes, Jazz.
Re: G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
OK, all of you who have never had a first generation UKPK, *this* is what it's supposed to feel like!
The HH exclusive brings back that solid feel that the FRN versions lack, just in a slimmer package, I'm really looking forward to future G10 UKPKs now that the tooling exists.
I also have to say that the split spring has finally been dialed in to equal the old full length spring, mine is a bit notchier on the close than any of my original versions, but just as smooth opening... much different from the two early split spring UKPKs I own, which are way under-sprung IMO.
Thanks Heinnie Haynes and Spyderco!!
I agree, the thin blade stock isn't a downgrade, now that it's mounted in a truly rigid handle. Using this knife makes it clear that all of the flex I objected to in the FRN version was handle scale related, not at all caused by the thinner blade.
Current FRN models are in BD1N, which is a significant upgrade in my experience (Para 3 LW).

Thinking of ordering one to Canada, but afraid that it will get confiscated by Canadian customs.
I know it's a non-locking slipjoint, but customs has the discretion to do whatever they want lately. Any Canadians have theirs NOT make it through?

I'll have to compare to my orange G10 S30V UKPK later. Forgot to check over the weekend

Re: G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
So I compared the new HH UKPK with the original G10 UKPK and sure enough the blade stock is thinner on the new version. New is .0975" and old is .1250"
Here's where it gets interesting for me. I also measured the behind the edge thickness directly underneath the Spyderco logo on both models. Both measurements were right at the shoulder. Taken under magnification. The new version measures .0250. The original is .0190 BTE.

Re: G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
Is it really that much better than BD1? I think I can wait for a significant upgrade in a drop point steel. I bought two Hennie Haynes so if I really want I can just use the S30V one.
Re: G10 UKPK officially makes a return! Heinnie Haynes Exclusive
BD1N feels significantly harder when sharpening (and using on hard materials), has a definite increase in edge stability and at least with diamond abrasives isn't really any harder to get sharp. in my book, BD1 was in the AUS8 range, BD1N seems closer to N690 or VG10 ...not hating on BD1, but in the UKPK blades I own it rolls easily and needs daily touch-ups to stay sharp enough for my tastes.

Hate to see this thread not being front and center so have to shout out what a wonderful knife the ukpk is!!!!
BD1N, S110V, and S30V are all great choices as well. Hope to see more of this knife in other steels, colors, and materials.
