Doublestuff 2

I’ve been using my DS2 quite a bit lately and I’m extremely impressed. You know what could make it better? Making it a bit bigger! Like another inch longer and at least a half inch wider. And also offer a brown/white ceramic version in the same parallelogram-cross-section shape.

I think that would be nice, but I'd also like a CBN and medium combo instead of CBN and fine.

Hi Woodpuppy,

That's another whole set of tooling. Hard to justify.

Understood, I just received my double stuff and the thought was why so tiny what was the reasoning?

Hi Doeswhatever,

I believe the smallest effective size for an abrasive for sharpening is about 4". This was a portable "pocket" unit so 5" seemed like a good size.

Ah got it pocket unit. Okay makes sense, used my new one on some Kitchen knives tonight, then had to duck back to the Sharpmaker to get it right. My free hand skills are sadly lacking. :)

I could get on board with a CBN/Medium Combo. It'd make for a great outdoor/camping stone when you know there might be a chance of causing more than your average day to day wear and tear.

Right now I'm using a Medium/Fine Double Stuff and a DMT Fine/Coarse Diafold for this purpose... At least until the CBN Golden Stone comes out, at which time I'll retire my DMT.

I don't know if it's feasible... But I'd REALLY like to see a three-in-one travel sharpener someday. Maybe CBN on one side for edge repairs, Medium on the other for your main sharpening stone, and then a little piece of Fine ceramic on the side for touch ups.

Something like this.

Actually... Maybe something more like this so you still have the both edges of the Medium and CBN stone to work with.

I have been wanting to pick up a Doublestuff 2, but recently got the CBN rods for my sharpmaker. Those work well in free hand, resting on my thigh of table top. I figured that should be close enough to a Doublestuff 2, since I already had the fine rods, and a fine pocket stone.

However, I recently learned of this CBN duckfoot (Goldenstone shaped) that I had to pick up. It didn’t cost me more than a Doublestuff 2 would, and it has a much higher functionality. They’re discontinued, but there are some to be had online. Mine was cheaper than what I’m seeing today, but they should still be worth the $50 people are asking. These aren’t my photos, but I just wanted to share so you can get an idea. I was excited to learn of its existence after liking the results from my CBN sharpmaker rods.

I wanted to say that I think this idea is excellent. I don’t need the portability personally, but this would make a great “all in one” for any beginner or someone who could put the portability factor to use.

Thanks! I’ve been wanting something of the sort for quite awhile now. Add a couple grooves to sharpen broadheads and fishing lures and it would literally be in my pocket at all times. I’m sure there’s a fantastic reason why Spyderco has never produced something like that though. :(

I had no idea there were still CBN Duckfoots to be had! If I would have known that, I would have picked up one of those instead of the Diafold. Although... I think I would prefer the Duckfoot if it had a 15 degree angle instead of 20 as I like to set the main bevel of my knives at 15 with a diamond/cbn stone and then set a 20 degree microbevel with the medium and fine stones.

When the Double stuff 2 isn't big enough for the job, or portability isn't a concern, I just reach for the Goldenstone. In fact, the Goldenstone has become my favorite free hand sharpener. I'm looking forward to the upcoming CBN version and the new base that Sal has talked about.

Hi Fixall,

Thanx for the suggestion, but I don't think the sales would support the tooling cost for a new stone as you mention. I thought the new "2" version would serve better, but I also thought the Duckfoot would.

Yeah, we can’t have it all! I’m just glad they have their amazing stones in so many different offer sizes and shapes.

Before ordering the duckfoot, I had been considering many other options like the Diafold, but wanted something a bit more. The 20 degree setting is unfortunate, but that is just one function. I have my cbn rods for the sharpmaker and those will be for my 15 degree setting. I’m sure there is also a way to use the duckfoot at 15 degrees with some sort of bi level surface as well. Will just want to make sure it’s solid before beginning.

I don't have the Doublestuff2 but have and use the original doublestuff. Handy useful stone but mine has been just about retired in favor of the Goldenstone. This is portable and very handy. The Goldenstone is fast becoming my favorite stone. In my opinion its very under appreciated.

I love my Doublestuffs and use them fairly often. I also use a Falkniven DC4 a lot. The grits on it are better for me for field use. Outside of kitchen knives I seldom use finer stones. I actually store my diamond and medium stones in my sharpmaker base because those are the two grits I use the most.

I would be very excited to see a CBN/Medium Doublestuff. It would most likely replace my DC4.

I’m sure you’re probably right. I can’t imagine milling a groove into a sandwiched, two piece stone to fit a ceramic rod would be easy or cost effective enough to justify its convenience. It sure would be sweet field sharpener though! I’d have no issue paying $75 for something of the sort.

I love the Double Stuff and Double Stuff 2, I just feel both sharpeners miss a niche that I’m trying to fill (but I’m probably in the minority).

When I’m in the field (camping, hiking, fishing, bow hunting, etc), I really only break out the CBN or diamond stone to repair edge damage (which is more likely in the field when you don’t have the proper tool on hand). I much prefer the Spyderco Medium and Fine stones to keep the microbevel sharp as the CBN is too coarse and a bit too aggressive for my skill level (although CBN has been much more forgiving than diamond in my experience). I also find the step from CBN to Fine to be a rather large one, and I much prefer setting a microbevel with a Medium stone as opposed to a Fine. And since I’m in the field and more likely to damage and thus repair the main bevel... I’m also more likely to have to reset the microbevel.

A CBN/Medium Double Stuff would be nearly as good since the leather pouch can be loaded with compound to fill in for the ceramic Fine insert. But man... a three surface, pocket sized stone that would allow you to set a bevel (on a knife of ANY steel), set a microbevel, refine the microbevel, sharpen broadheads, fishhooks, hatchets, etc would be amazing.

You know, I’d probably be willing to pay closer to $100 for something like that if it was executed well (thin!). For now... I’ll keep dreaming, lol.

Hi Sal the only problem with he Duck-foot stone was it was set to 20 degrees and a base never came out for it to change the angle to 15 degrees, or less, I have heard of people making their own the other thing in my opinion that hurt it was a lack of instructions those never came out either.

As far as the stone itself goes it is excellent and one of the best for keeping S30V razor sharp. S30V really likes that grit.

I just got a doublestuff 2 and it's truly amazing. I'm new to freehand (well, really sharpening in general), and had to repair some edge damage to my Hap40 dfly from accidentally hitting some steel wire cutting through some crafting supplies for my wife. The CBN took to the Hap40 like a dream, and I was able to get a decent edge on just that side (though toothy as all get out). Jumping into the fine was definitely a leap, but after spending a bit of time there and then just a few strokes on the suede pouch as a strop, my dfly was shaving sharp. I do miss the medium grit, but I think I have my perfect solution - just get a medium pocket stone to round out the set! As Sal has mentioned elsewhere, the medium wears out over time whereas the fine is pretty much lifetime durable. The CBN I will probably save for edge damage / reprofiling super steels, and this way I can replace the medium as it wears out. Thanks for the awesome stones, Sal!

It’s a great stone for sure. In my pocket with the original as we speak, with green compound on one side of one leather pouch. The two together fit the left thigh pocket of my carharts just right.

Is there a plan to offer the larger form-factor benchstone in cbn?
