I think the number of steel junky's is limited and the expendable funds they have is limited. We were only able to offer them as we could because of low margins and consumer direct. More of a "gift" to the steel junky's than a profitable project.

Sal,

Mule Team is one of those things that makes Spyderco stand out from the rest. Just something to keep in mind.

Why do you consider the mules to be short term stuff? Exclusives, they sometimes sell out within much less than an hour. I'd say THAT is short term stuff. And the distributors seem to like it.
I'm not Sal, but the sense I get is that he means other dealers--the guys who come to Shot show. Big chains.

I'm curious about what the cost would be for a afi-focused specialty retailer to commission a MT run; the optics of the increase in price over the list price of the old factory-direct pieces might be more than enough to scare them off, though. (People complain enough about a "Spyder tax" as it is. Imagine what the YouTube trolls would say about a limited-run $200 fixed blade without scales.)

It seems clear to me that the Golden-made folders are for all intents and purposes a more mainstream folding MT series. We're not seeing all the weirdest steels yet, but too many for me to collect.

If you really want to experiment with something esoteric, the bar to entry for getting test blades heat treated is also much lower than it used to be. We truly live in a golden age.

Dunno how far-fetched this idea is, but if it's possible to squeeze out one more run... it would be really cool for Spyderco to debut Larrin's "New Steel" in a Mule Team blade.
Larrin is designing a new steel?

I'd definitely be interested in what Larrin is working on. He's a real metallurgist with a real interest in knives, which is a pretty rare combination. It's usually knife people who are learning by doing.

I'd love to see a Larrin/Spyderco collaboration with some brand new steel. :)

I ordered 2 of the MT26s while the were available the other day. Going to really miss the mule teams if they don’t make any new ones going forward. Probably my favorite overall Spyderco knife. I wasn’t lucky enough to collect the whole set, but I believe I have 10-12 of them with some being duplicates. The LC200N model is one of my most used kitchen knives.

Did the Mule Team program get put to rest?
I still have my K390 mule. That was such a great program.
Would've liked to have got the Cobalt Special and some others.
Wander if Sal might consider some re-runs of select Mules...
Mac you should get a commission :D

Lets go out with a bang! Bring on the S390 Mule! T15 would work as well. ;)

It seemed to me that as the Mule program went on that only the steels that really pushed the envelope did well. The S110V and Maxamet Mules sold out fast. S390 would as well.

Just checked. The only mule in stock is Mule Team #27 (Micro-Melt PD#1). #20, #22 & #26 also show up when you search for "mule". But they show "out of stock" when you bring them up.

Sal, make #28 and I will buy 2.

Would anyone else buy a new mule team?
