I am 100 percent for this. However, would you and I and others be confident that it would not easilly rust?

I would be against it. I think that there is more than enough HAP-40/REX 45 in sprints and exclusives to go around. I think that it's very cool that
Spyderco still offers a steel as high of quality as ZDP-189 in its value line of folders.
Do right always. It will give you satisfaction in life.

I’m not sure corrosion would be much more of an issue than it already is with ZDP-189. I suppose unwanted patina could be. That problem is easily solved by EDCi.

Not really entitled to judge, for I have very little experience with ZDP.
That said, I think it can't get much better than laminated HAP 40 for me personally so I'd vote "yes".
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

For me, HAP40 is a truly premium steel with great fine edge retention, very good working edge retention, very good toughness AND ease of sharpening. I sold my ZDP-189 Stretch 1, replaced it with a HAP40, and am very pleased.

I have both and find ZDP to be a much better steel for my use.

I think that this sounds like a terrible idea. It is an easy NO from me. Sorry.

What advantages do you find ZDP-189 has over HAP40?

HAP40, yes. Laminate, no. Therefore, keep ZDP. If no laminate, offer both.

Do you know of any knives in solid HAP40? Not sure if stock is available?

None that I’m aware of. Note my subsequent thought on the matter.

I'd vote no.

I actually think ZDP is one of the most underrated steels in the Spyderco line up. I think the ZDP models should stay in ZDP.

This as well.
ZDP-189 is one of my favorite steels in the Spyderco line.

Spyderco is the only place in town if you want ZDP-189. That's really cool. ZDP-189 also has very good fine edge holding. I'm all for HAP40 as well, preferably unlaminated, but not if it means wiping out ZDP.

I can´t call myself a steel-expert, so may I ask: What are the practical disadvantages of laminating HAP 40?

Actually I started a thread about this very topic some time ago ( viewtopic.php?f=2&t=82467&p=1295326&hil ... e#p1294963 )

In practical use I still can´t find any real disadvantages of cladded HAP 40 (but some advantages); Looks / scratch resistence... is another story of course

Clearly it works for Spyderco to offer a version of their regular production Japanese knives in a premium steel. I’m wondering if ZD-189 is still the best one, and/or is there room for another steel in the lineup? Obviously, Spyderco knows a lot more about this than any of us, but they do value our input.

I'd keep ZDP-189. I'm not too interested in the laminated HAP40 (the super soft cladding steel scratches easily and looks awful). I'd like to get some solid HAP40, if possible.

HAP 40 doesn't appeal to me. I've never used it but it doesn't appear to be a steel I'm interested in. Not that interested in ZDP either although I have two Spyderco's with ZDP. Cost benefit just isn't their for me with either of these steels.

The BD1N at high rockwell sounds like a winner so I am going to vote for this. (There is Japan kitchen cutlery in this steel so it appears that it is doable).

What is the Japan equal of Bohler M390??? I'll vote for that one too!!!

So I guess my vote is for dumping HAP 40 and ZDP and finding something better.
