FRN de-dye / re-dye

#1

Post by SpyderSeth »

NOTE: The colors in the images are brighter than they appear in person.

I am not a big fan of green knives, so I decided to try and de-dye and re-dye these scales. They were originally yellow salt scales that were died with (I think) aquamarine Rit dye to get the green color.

Here is a picture from the seller (BBB aka Big Brown Bear aka Deadboxhero) that better represents the starting color.

Image

First I heated 1.5 quarts of water to 180F. I mixed in one packet of Rit Color Remover and stirred to dissolve.

Image

I placed the scales in the solution and stirred for 1-hour while maintaining the 180F temperature. I removed the scales and rinsed under cold water.
Here are the results (there is still a noticeable green tint in person):

Image

I heated a new pot of water to 180F and added about 1/3 of a bottle of Rit dye.

I put the scales in for 2-3 minutes, removed and rinsed. This is what I got:

Very cool!

I dyed a Para 3 of mine that I've been considering undyeing, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm glad to see that the color remover works pretty well. I just wonder if the DyeMore I used will come off of G10 as well as your experiment turned out.

I would have preferred blue, but I don't know of a way that won't turn it some shade of green.

Knives plus does a fade, from the yellow to green to blue. Somehow they can make the end blue, so it is possible.

Dye remover does work on g10. I died natural g10 with the synthetic dye then reversed with the rit dye remover as pictured. Excellent results when following the directions.

It was curiosity that got me to try this as well. I figured the worst case scenario would be dying it black.

never used the dye - does the frn stay died eg does it come off with use / sweat etc? does it fade and yr hands turn green etc?
is it really that simple to change scale colour 'permanantly'?

I'd guess either light green and a tiny bit of red/orange or blue and a tiny bit of red/orange. That's a tough question to answer, since I've never mixed colors. Perhaps try combinations on a less expensive Salt, if you have one. YouTube might have answers or helpful ideas.

thanks for pointing these resources out. looks like some really good options. how much of a factor is the yellow starting point when going for an olive green?

So far, so good. I ran out of things to cut so I put it to work in the kitchen alongside the Spydiechef.
