K390 Caly?

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

I wonder if there is any chance of us seeing a Caly3 LW or a Caly 3.5 LW in K390? This is a superior knife design. Sal just needs to bring it to Golden so it can get all of the advancements the Native has gotten. This would be better than a Native and a Delica rolled into one.

Does Spyderco have any K390 in Golden? All the K390 models so far have been Japan and Italy.

Hi Doc,

It might be possible with the Caly 3.5 LW in the future.

Tom,

I believe we have some of all of our steels in Golden.

Not 100% sure what Sal's cryptic message means - yes on K390 Caly, yes on having K390 in Golden.

Can we please combine these two to mean Golden made Caly 3.5 with K390!!!! Or Caly 3.

Does this mean the Caly LW would be planned to be a Golden made knife?

I'd be surprised if that were the case. Typically Spydercos don't get their country of origin moved around like that.

I can think of at least two models factory-jumping internationally: Urban (Golden to Maniago) and ATR (Golden and Seki city). I’m thinking there might be others too...

That said — if the LW Caly 3.5 comes to Golden in say S30V with that blade shape and form factor in black bidirectional FRN (and later other colors/steels!!) WITH some of the incredible CQI updates imparted to the lightweight Native 5, that will an ultimate model IMHO. I’d really like it to first come in that dark gray FRN of the K390 Urban, lightweight Chap, etc. over plain black, but I’ll take what I can get! But man Sal, what a looker it would be in that dark gray!!! :D

I'd still rather have the Chap in K390, but I'd definitely buy the Caly too.

In addition to the Urban and ATR mentioned by RS, these models also had two-country production:
Renegade and Blackhawk: Golden and Seki City
Herbst: Germany and Golden
Walker: Switzerland and Seki City
Native: Golden and Seki City (Gen 4)

( next lull I'll dig into the cerebral crypts looking for others)

Have we seen a light weight caly?
Seems like a new model to me.
Closest thing would be the ukpk, which would make a sense for a golden build.

We haven't seen it yet. Just hints and clues here and there from Sal.

I'm definitely in for one or two if possible. This is a good idea for us high performance knife people who prefer simple and proven designs. I already like everything about this knife and feel a K390 Caly 3.5 can only turn out well.

The Kiwi was also made in different locations, wasn't it? There was the inexpensive variant made in China and then the older and newer ones.

Yes, although the slip-joint version made in China could well have gotten an appellation to distinguish it from the Japanese backlock Kiwi. (if you're a splitter not a lumper.)

Don't forget (!) the D'Allara, all of which are Seki-made except the WTC version, which is Golden.

I believe I heard people refer to them as "Chinese Gooseberries" because that's another name for the Kiwifruit.

I’d love an FRN K390 Caly, so long as the FRN is lined to prevent the pivot-screw assembly from spinning.

Thanks Sal!

You need a bigger factory, I think.
