Which SE to get as a first SE?

#1

Post by vilePossum »

Well, see the title, I want to try out a full SE Spyderco.
I think the (para) military is out of the question for me personally...
Delica or endura in VG-10? Salt? Or something totally different?

I'd recommend something in a Salt series since they're less expensive and less of a loss if you don't like it. However, I do also think that FFG and SE go together like peanut butter and jelly so any option with that combo will slice better than a hollow grind Salt.

I'd just look at the available options and choose your favorite. I'm definitely partial to H1 with serrations but in performance they'll all tell you what you need to know. Sharpening may be a different story, as I think H1 is far easier to sharpen than say S30V and may give you a more enjoyable experience. Sharpness is key in good performing SE.

I'd recommend trying one from the Byrd line to get the experience for the least amount of money.

As noted above, FFG and SE will provide the best slicing performance. Personally, I think a little bit of belly also helps. With that in mind, may I suggest the Native 5 LW SE? It's one of my favorite SE Spydies (noting that I currently have a Salt wharncliffe SE in my pocket).

I think SE, FFG, VG-10 and Wharncliffe are a fantastic combination. I'd either get a Delica 4 Wharncliffe SE, or wait for the soon to be released Endura 4 Wharncliffe SE, depending on what size blade you prefer.
I don't get people who only carry one knife :thinking ;)

Wait for the new Endura Wharncliffe to be released.
FFG and SE will be available.
If you do not like it,,, easier to recover the investment with a design new on the market

I have limited experience but I like the low teeth of the para 3. The tenacious looks similar. My salt 1 has taller teeth that snag a lot. Other have said that they will smooth out with some sharpening. Maybe the teeth are taller because h1 is softer and will be sharpened more frequently. Don’t know. Maybe try a tenacious

This may be the best advice yet, but I have to echo what David said and SE and H1. This thread is already full of opinions and I'm sure many more will appear. What are you hoping to achieve with this SE? Will it be a companion blade to your current PE (this is how I mix SE into my EDC) or are you going to replace PE.

Perhaps a combo edge might be the best solution if you are only planning to carry one blade. As for my completely bias recommendations, hawkbill SE knives (ladybug, dragonfly, spyderhawk) are outstanding performers in SE and H1

Delica or Tenacious are good knives and not very pricy.

Either a Delica wharncliffe or a Native 5 SE. Full flat grind and SE is awesome.

I have two recommendations for a first Spyderedged folder. First and foremost I think the best one you could start out with would be a Golden Made NATIVE model. That NATIVE in SE is a great one to start out with and it will give you a feel for what to expect from one of the bigger full SE folders.

Now if you work where a Hawkbill would have an advantage I would say to go with a Harpy in SE. Actually you can't go wrong with either model.

Both of these models will really give you a feel for a Spyderedged blade and once you get the hang of using either or both of those models you should be able to do well with most any Spyderco SE model.

My first SE and Hawkbill was the little Laybug. It hard to believe a knife that essentially looks like a kids toy could perform the way it does. :)

This is easy...Pacific Salt.

Because it's the best overall serrated edge folding knife on the planet.

I recommend the byrd rescue 2. See if you like it. I think it'll sell you on SE knives.

Most economical and not very pointy teeth (less snagging), byrd hawkbill. If wharncliffe/sheepsfoot is desired, try cara cara rescue.

I think the Tenacious SE or Delica Wharncliffe SE are great choices. They are thin, high performance blades. I’m sure the Para3 Lightweight would be great in SE too, whenever it comes out.

I’d steer clear of the Salt SE or standard Delica/Endura SE as a first just because of the thick saber ground blade. But those are awesome too.
