Carrying an old favorite makes me want Spyderco to relaunch the Superleaf

My 3rd (of too many to count) Spyderco is the superleaf. I had my wedding in Golden and picked up 5 for myself and groomsmen. It was the last 5 they had at the outlet if I recall. Anyway, I just felt motivated to post how much I love this knife. It's not perfect compared to other knives that have gone through the CQI process, but it's really nice. I hadn't carried it in awhile, but in pacing up most of my collection for a move, I ended up with a few at the back of the drawer.

What I like.
Large blade with ample handle. It's very nice to use.
A lot of space between the liners means nothing is going to get stuck in there.
Thin liners and scales keep the weight and thickness down

Personally, I think this is a perfect folding campsite knife with a few improvements.
Improved steel. Maybe tool steel
Phosphor bronze washers instead of nylon
Natural micarta
General refinements to action and lockup

I know there is a lot of overlap with a manix and maybe the shaman (I've yet to hold one of these) or some others, but this knife just has a special place for me.

A caution about comparing the Superleaf to the Caribbean.

The Superleaf is considerably thicker at the spine, and it has a (overly-wasteful) choil. Big differences. So, not ot a slicer, but safe to fondle absent-mindedly. The Caribbean is slicy but, without a choil or even a notch, can be dangerous to fondlers.

Forewarned, you’ll probably like the Caribbean. Although the Manix2 XL has a different lock-up, you might like it as well. But if stout is what you want, consider the Shaman a CQId Superleaf with your name on it.

I carried my SuperLeaf a lot. I think that I prefer thinner blade stock, but then it wouldn't be a SuperLeaf (more like a PM2).

I think that if it were sprinted, a super tough tool steel would be a good choice. I bet a CruWear or 3v sprint of that beefy blade would sell well.

The Superleaf definitely isn't a slicer. It feels like a tank in your hand though.

Nice knife. I rounded off the pointy top of the jimping on the spine.
Maybe we could get one with Carpenter® steel's Micro-Melt® PD#1.
Might even sell off those mule team knives no one wants. :D

I had one and loved it. I got my PM2 while I still had it, and comparing them back and forth I preferred the PM2, so I kept that forever and sold the Superleaf. I've regretted not having it many times, but I made the choice, so I had to deal with it. If there was another run of them, I'd get another.

I may take a look at the caribbean. I have manix 2 lw and a few pm2. The bushing and bronze on the PM2 make it have a much better action. I was going to shop for some bronze washers for it one of these days.

I think the shaman will be my next. I'm holding out for a nice sprint.

Always liked the Superleaf. Didn't get one as I was holding out for the Lil'Temp 3.

One thing I'm betting - that pommel hook rubs a nice spot on your pants pocket

That looks like a good design and very useful tool. I would like to see a light weight version with FRN handle.

Big fan of the SuperLeaf. Because of the lock and large shape, this has become my go-to gardening knife. I can safely deploy it and close it with one gloved hand. Excellent ergonomics.

I carry mine fairly often. I almost sold my first Superleaf despite my love of the handle (I really enjoyed using my Superhawk) and it wasn't until I picked up this terrific reground version that I really enjoyed carrying and using it. Thanks again to Travis. Despite having one of the thickest blade stocks of the Spyderco folder catalog, the right geometry can allow even this beast to outslice even the legendary Caly.
