So yesterday at work I'm sitting here on the forum and one of my coworkers comes into the office. He says "you like Seki-City knives" I kind of chuckle to myself, but am intrigued that he knew some of these knives are manufactured there. I told him they are Spyderco knives, and that yes indeed, some of them are manufactured there in Japan. He tells me that a couple years ago he bought a box full of around 20 knives from a friend of his for $100, and that he has one that looks like these (hole in the blade stood out to him). He had to work today, and I told him I would come in for some overtime and would love to check it out.

Turns out, I believe this is a 1st generation Endura?? Please correct me if I'm wrong. G-2 steel, molded pocket clip. The knife is in pretty good shape, serrations are still surprisingly razor sharp...sharper than my SE Salt 2 I bought just this past summer! No blade play and the blade free falls when engaging the lock. The tip is a little bent, but that's about the only flaw I can see right now.


He's offering to sell it to me for $25...I probably shouldn't pass this up!

I would give him $30 and say thanks for the steel :D

I've never had anything in G-2. I just feel like it's such an older model and it's in good condition for the most part. I certainly don't need a huge Endura in full SE...but it is pretty nice! Amazed at how sharp it is.

Great find! I think for $25 I'd buy just to have a nice older model.

At $25 it's a steal.

$50 is about all it's worth ! (Give or take $10).

That's the same as mine except my blade is Aus-8.

I've recently purchased a few more in Aus-8 and VG-10 but none in G2.

Great knives to carry, hold and use.

I always liked the simplicity of the molded clip but the idea that it could lose tension or even break off and I can't do anything about it really bothers me.

The second gen integral clip was a bit wider. I have this thinner version myself. They definitely loose tension over time. I never broke one off, but a couple of my friends did! I think they were fairly prone to that.

Mine hasn't lost tension in 27+ years. Don't / haven't used it much but I have caught it occassionaly on webbing
and it's still fine.

As for breaking, sorry but with the exception of the odd accident you have to abuse things to break them.

Thankfully I have quite a few knives I rotate between, so this pocket clip shouldn't be an issue.

I'm sure it's mostly paranoia but I'm glad clips are serviceable now.

The first Spyderco I bought from a Spyderco at a county fair. It was a Rescue with the molded clip. The guy working the booth said if it ever broke or stopped working they would cut the clip off and drill the handle for a metal clip, which they were phasing in at the time. Anyone ever have that done?

The next year at the fair I bought a Native and soon after lost the Rescue. Haven’t owned a molded clip since.

What’s the story with the hump at the pivot area on the clip side, does it serve to reinforce the pivot with extra material?

I'm not sure about the original purpose, but that hump would appear to reinforce the pivot. I carry a similar Endura (wide integral clip, AUS-8) and it does make holding the knife when thumb opening much easier that it would be without it. The Merlin I just got has the same hump, only smaller.

Sal said that hump is to aid in one hand opening. I don’t get it though. The clip has always been my aid for a good one hand open grip.

Rest assured Sal, it has ended up in the hands of someone that will truly appreciate it! Who knows how many hands it's passed through the past 20 years. Seems surreal to me that this opportunity even presented itself! Had I not been on the forum on my desktop that particular minute, him and I likely would have never had the conversation, as he typically doesn't work in my area.
