After today's reveal of the Para 3 LW, I would venture to say that the best PM2 for ocean work is the inevitable LC200N PM2 LW Salt. When we will see it is anyone's guess, but it will certainly be a day that lives in infamy.
I've said several times before that the popular models should come in multiple versions- a standard version, a Salt version, and an upscale version with S110V and/or M4 steel.

How badly does he want edge retention and how good is he at sharpening? That would answer it all.

That’s fantastic. Thanks for the example! I think seems like that’s probably the way to go, then.

Here's his exact quote: "That was after multiple "dips" of like 5-10 minutes each. Probably an hour total. After the first dip the green was LIME green. Still very poppy but definitely green. I used teal Rit dye."

In my experience the blade of the pm2 will be fine, but the stop pin might be a concern for rust (since he'll be using it by the ocean).
However, some minor maintenance and maybe the occasional breakdown (if he's comfortable with disassembly) will help prevent this. My first pm2 developed rust in that area, disassembled cleaned it and took the majority of it off. I still use it to this day, and my use habits haven't really changed. I'm just more wary of that area than I was before.
