Urban LW + N680 (or LC200N)

#1

Post by Doc Dan »

I really like the Urban Light Weight, but it would be nice if it came in a nitrogen, rust proof or highly rust resistant steel. Since Spyderco likes to use steels made in the region, I wonder how N680 would do if properly heat treated? (LC200N might be better).

I have a couple of knives in N680 and it is very rust resistant, extremely so. They are both Benchmades and Benchmade tends to run their steel a bit on the soft side. The N680 holds an edge okay, but nothing to write home about. I think it is about like AUS8 or something. However, and I do not know about this, I think if it were run harder it would hold an edge better. Some steels lose their rust resistance when run too hard, I understand. Is this true of N680?

This would give us a pocket knife larger than than the Dragonfly and smaller than the Salt 2 that can go anywhere.

Hi Doc,

We've tested N680. It's ok. I think I would prefer LC. I'll consider your request.

Sounds like a match made in heaven. I’ve got my fingers crossed for a LC200N Urban. :D

Why the Urban over the UKPK? I'd buy an LC200n Urban but would prefer the UKPK, and with the AEB-L Urban coming out, shouldn't the UKPK get some sprint love? Besides, Spyderco already had the steel in Golden.

Like I said, I'll buy this if they make it. Just wanting to know why there seems to be an Urban preference in the forum.

I hope the Salt UKPK happens, but I'd take an LC Urban too. One guess why the Urban has gotten more sprint love lately: Does it sell better? Being a bit smaller may give it a broader market.

I agree, I’ve been waiting for a UKPK sprint for a while now. It’ll come I think, maybe someday. I hope anyway. Stilll, happy news about another Urban sprint.

As for why LC200N for the Urban and not the UKPK, I think it has to do with steel origin. I remember reading something about sprints in Golden no longer using non U.S. made steel. And since LC200N is European it’s a good fit for the Italian made Urban.

Size wise the Urban fits between the small DF and larger Salt 2. It makes more sense. If it can be had in LC200n it would be a go anywhere pocket companion.

What color, though? I’d like FDE or FDOD...but that’s me.

I can only speak for myself, but the FRN Urban just feels more solid than the FRN UKPK (which has noticeable flex in the handle), plus it still has a full backspring, rather than the split-spring of the current UKPK.

I'd really like to see an Italian made Urban with G10/CF/Micarta/Ti scales... though tan FRN and AEB-L will be just fine for now!

I’m just going by where sal said Spyderco gets theirs in another thread about LC200N.

Zknives says USA made, but that there are European equivalents. http://www.zknives.com/knives/steels/lc200n.shtml

I always thought it was USA made which is the only reason I suggested N680. But, as Sal indicated, he prefers LC200N and I certain agree with that.

Making an Urban Salt is more complicated due to the hardware. LC is made in Europe.

Made in Europe? Then the Urban in LC200N is a good possibility? That would be mighty fine.

I like the Urban better than the UKPK, personally. This would be a universal pocket knife.
