Poll: Who´d like to see a non-totally-rustproof, in return budgetfriendly Caribbean?

Probably still my all-time favorite folder is the Endura.

Now the Caribbean looks like a knife, that eliminates the few flaws I find in the Endura, when I am very nitpicky.

- Sacrifices practically no cutting edge to Ricasso or choil
- Has a more handfilling handle, I assume

Other than that, it features quite the same size and bladelength. Personally, I like the backlock (Endura) over the Comp.lock (Carrribean)
There are really not many knifes in Spydercos lineup above the budget line (Tenacious and so on) that emphasize maximum length of cutting edge, the Caribbean does that.

With the Caribbean, you pay for the LC 200 N steel, especially the corrosion resistence. That´s totally vindicated, of course.
But I personally have no need for that amount of rustproofness, but like the overall shape and design of the knife.

So I´d like to see a more budgetfriendly version, I´d be totally fine with S30 V or even VG 10

How do you feel about this?

I, on the other hand, don't mind sacrificing a bit of blade length in order to have a knife with a usable 50/50 choil. I'm also not a fan of wrong handed locks. Not crazy about striped handles either, so my interest in the Caribbean could best be described as non-existent. If I wanted another folder in that size range, I'd just buy another VG-10 FRN Stretch II. Excellent steel, decent rust resistance, 50/50 choil, fully ambidextrous, all for a much lower price.

Thanks for your vote and reply! I totally hear you... The Stretch (One, that is, Two not so much) is my second-most-loved folder of all times, sometimes I think I even prefer it over the Endura.

What I like in the Endura: The hand is placed close to the edge without having to choke up. That´s even better with the Caribbean (and choking up on the actual EDGE is in fact really not that dangerous, imho. Did it a lot with my Minigrip, no problems there...)
What I like in the Stretch (ONE!): You get that "choil-feeling", without loosing to much edge or beeing placed TOO far from the edge in a regular grip...

So on "no choil days" a knife like the Caribbean would be something I´d maybe like to carry (never had one in hands)

/ Ok, the handle color is something I did not consider... ;) I am undecided yet, at the best... ;)

I put No, but am yet to see one as not crazy of the bee striped yellow handle.

I like corrosion resistance because it alleviates any worry on users part.

IF they go budget version, I know it's old school but Aus-8 ? Bloody rust proof from what I have seen in 27 years
with an Endura - that spent a fair bit of time in Salt Water. (Aus-8 more by luck than choice so I lucked out getting
a good knife with good steel).

Right, I did not consider the handle color at all when starting the poll, just the overall design..

I like corrosion resistance too, but in that capacity for my use VG10 and S30V give me all I need, so there is no need to pay extra for even MORE rustproofness, which I wouldn't even notice... would feel different for sure if I lived in a more humid part of the world.

I don't know if it would really end up that much cheaper (I wonder about the cost of LC vs other steels) but my interest in this model really isn't because it's a Salt model, it's more about the ergonomics and overall shape. I'm interested in trying out LC/SE but I would still be into this model if it were plain black G10 and S30V.

Thanks for your vote and reply! I personally would probably even PREFER black G10 and S30V, albeit I don´t know enough yet about LC´s properties other than it beeing rustproof. Corrosion resistence would not be a deciding factor for my personal use, if other parameters were worse (less good, to pout it better) than those of S30 V.

What appeals to me is primarily the size of both blade and handle and the huge amount of edge. I guess they COULD do a more budgetfriendly version, lets say in FRN and VG10 - ?

I thought I heard something about VG10 being somewhat expensive, or at least not as much cheaper than other steels as it used to be.

Regardless, I love the lock and overall design but I also would have been very interested if it were just a molded FRN handle like the Pacific and with a back lock and H1. I've also heard that H1 isn't too inexpensive either but if they could do this knife like a Pacific and price it similarly I'd be interested.

VG10 being somewhat expensive: Ok, interesting, didn´t know that... so maybe Spydercos VG10 knifes are relatively cheap mostly cause the steel is easyer to work with and causes lees wear on grinders and the like?
/ Yes, the overall design looks great. As I stated already, not too many knifes in Spydercos lineup emphasize maximum possible length of edge, other than in the budget line.

You may want to consider the recently disco'd D'Allara 3. Not sure about overseas procurement, but it appears to still be available at good closeout prices in the US.

The first thing I’d change on the Caribbean is the yellow.

With the Caribbean, you pay for the LC 200 N steel, especially the corrosion resistence.
How did you come to that conclusion ?

Besides being made in Taiwan, while budget Spydies are made in mainland China, technically, the Caribbean is a more sophisticated knife than the Endura: a much stronger Pivot and standoffs (more than twice (?) the diameter ?), a generously dimension'ed stop pin, a ceramic detent, and finally an additional internal stop pin guiding the blade, making it very smooth and keeping it centered, even if configured to fall shut. And while the blade is similar length to the Endura, it's more substantial, closer to the Manix XL, I feel.

The Caribbean was my most positive knife surprise in 2018, and I bought it for $140 from ebay with coupon. Super price for what you get; no need to cheapen it down. Now, give me the Caribbean in a tool steel (M4, K390, Rex45, Cruwear, etc.), and I'll buy another two :) Any scale color will be fine :)

Roland.

I paid $120 for the carribean. That's not bad. I like the carefree nature of lc200n so I'd keep that. As for the colors, rit dye can take care of that.

I can't really vote, because the other steels I'd like to see in a (preferably XL) Caribbean wouldn't necessarily be cheaper than LC200N. XHP would be nice imo.

Not sure about a budget version. The price isn’t bad as it is.

I would like to see this model in other flavors though. It looks like a great design. Maybe 10V? :)

The model name Caribbean kind of goes with the Salt performance characteristics, so making a Caribbean that rusts kind of (ahem) tarnishes the branding, in my opinion.

I am warming up to FRN but I will never buy another FRN knife without steel liners there is way too much play in the pivot / backlock in my Pacific Salt SE 1st run not sure if they added liners to the second edition or not.

FRN in my Stretch2 which has steel liners has far less play in it. Also discovering VG-10 has become and OMG experience wow, I wish I would have tried VG 10 much sooner.

Not I. I am hoping for more LC200N (need a Chap LW Salt!), not less. Not really a huge fan of the Carribean series with those scales either. Would much rather have a G10 Military Salt and G10 Native Salt in LC200N

I’m disinclined to second-guess Sal on his designs. The current Caribbean is what he wanted it to be until CQI says otherwise, right?

Whatever, I haven’t really carried mine yet (other new knives have been distracting me).

But, I’ve had a few surprises as I mindlessly felt for its choil. Sorta wish it had at least a notch like the Endura/Delica.

OP, isn’t the Tenacious close to what you seem to want?
