Devin Thomas has positive comments about AEB-L:

http://www.devinthomas.com/faq.html

“Roman Landes found AEB-L to have greater edge stability, toughness, and wear resistance than 52100. Edge stability is a property that describes a steel's ability to hold a finely sharpened edge. 52100 is one of the most well respected carbon steels, and is well known for its small carbides, high toughness, and high edge stability, so it's impressive that AEB-L was able to beat it in these categories, while also having greater wear resistance and being a stainless steel. Many users have reported that AEB-L sharpens as easily as any other carbon steel they have used.”

Are 13C26 and AEB-L both PM process?
Both are ingot steels according to zknives:

Interesting that Carpenter also makes a variant:

The amount of molybdenum kicks it a little out of the comparison imo.

Tom, neither are as far as I know. It was created for razorblades I seem to recall. That is a real chore to stand up to a heavy beard day after day and still shave.

I hope to see these low carbon steels in more spydies.I quote from my previous thread: "John Verhoven, metallurgist, says that AEB-L would be the best all-around steel for knifemakers. The reasons he gives for good edge retention are: 1. hardens to 63-64 Rc 2. very fine carbides that avoid carbide pull-out (which happens in coarse carbides) and add to wear resistance 3. The K2 carbide is formed, which gives better wear resitance to the K1 carbide which is formed in Mo steels such as 154-CM." I only hope Spyderco will nail the hardness ....

How did I overlook this thread? I’m in on an AEB-L Urban.

We are all excitedly waiting on this one.

I was unaware that AEB-L has greater edge stability than 52100. I knew it had to be good in order to make a good razor blade steel with the very thin blades they are making nowadays. However, I would never have guessed it was better than 52100.

My experience with 52100 in a knife is that it will bend and roll but not chip, normally. I cannot say it will never chip, but only I have not experienced it. It will take an extremely fine edge and hold its sharpness a decent amount of time and it is very, very easy to put that fine edge back on.

Between this and the new Para 3 LW with 14C28N it's already shaping up to be an interesting year.

Bump

I'm really hoping this one has a spot in the next Reveal... or at least releases this year.

Wait, what? I was aware of the Para 3 LW in CTS BD1N, but was not aware of 24C28N. Is this real?

14C28N* :D

http://zknives.com/knives/steels/se/14c28n.shtml

It is a real steel and from what I've heard about the steel, it was first developed for Kershaw as an "upgrade" to 13C26; mainly in the corrosion resistance department with the addition of Nitrogen. I doubt Spyderco has plans to use this particular steel, but who knows . I recall seeing the Para 3 LW being released in BD1N as well

Ha, sorry about that. Wasn't even looking at the dates. Of course, then I fat fingered 14C28N! Really was just curious if there was some announcement that I had missed. All good!

AEB-L at 62-64? Would they dare? I'd have to buy if they announced that hardness. Made me preorder a REX45 Para 3 when Sal announced it was averaging 66. My only preorder to date, couldn't miss it.

Many of us are waiting eagerly for the Coyote Urban LW with AEB-L. I was hoping it would be out already. Maybe I am too impatient.
