Christmas funds! advice?

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

i unexpectedly got the native salt for Christmas and i've been using it all day to open gifts. i'm loving it.

i also received some extra money from some of my family members and i'm thinking about grabbing one of the other spydies from my list before the prices go up in january. the models in consideration are the yojimbo 2, manix 2 dlc g10, and the police 4 - in that order.

i've wanted the yojimbo 2 since my eyes were opened to it a few months ago. it seems like a great combination of utility and self defense and i don't currently own any compression lock models. my main hang up for this knife is that i'd love for it to be a salt model and/or dlc coated. if that will happen in the future, i'd rather wait to get it then.

the manix 2 lw is my favorite knife. i carry a knifecenter exclusive xhp model and i love it. it would be sweet to have a slightly heavier duty (not that i've ever found the lw lacking in any way) version of my favorite knife.

the police has intrigued me since i found out about the g10 model recently. i'm not considering this one as strongly because i live in hawaii and i don't really want a steel that will rust on me easily here. also, this model is more expensive than the others and it's more than what i got from family, so i'd have to put some more money toward it.

i'd love to hear the opinions of the forum. help sway me toward one of these or another model i might still be sleeping on.

sal, i know you guys are keeping new developments closer to the chest, but if you could give me some indication about the future of the yojimbo 2, i would greatly appreciate it. should i expect a production model with dlc or in lc200n?

thanks in advance. :)

i have, but it just doesn’t appeal to me at all. i might change my mind if i had one in my hand, but i’m pretty happy with my pacific salt for now.

honestly, it’s probably the perfect edc, but i can’t get past how it looks. i hate being shallow, but it is what it is.

If you are going to get all three, then get the police. If the price increases are by percent, then the police will go up more because it costs more.

Ladybug when i read your post i don't see any real conviction to buy one of the three knives. The only reason you mention is that as of 2019 the prices are going up. My advice is to keep your money in your pocket and buy eventually the knife you really like. And if it does not exist yet...wait.

I'd wait for the 20cv manix on Jan 15, personally.

looks like $130 at dlt. i’m not as much of a steel nut as most people around here. 20cv sounds like a great steel for me, but i’m not really a fan of the satin and red combo. it looks like a cheap knife you’d pick up from a hardware store to me. i know that’s very shallow, but that’s what it looks like to me in the pictures.

i think what you are seeing is my desire to own all of these as opposed to a strong desire toward one of them. as i said, i’m leaning heavily toward the yojimbo for a few reasons.

You could always swap to aftermarket scales.

20CV/204p/m390 is pretty much the best EDC stainless I've found so far (and I've tried almost everything). If I don't need stainless, I'll go with Maxamet, but the m390 clones have been better for me than any of the sXXv.

Police 4 would make a great companion to the Native 5 Salt. Essentially, it is everything that everything the Native 5 isn't: Long, thin, dense, nonstainless, high wear resistance, super slicey.
It is a great great knife.

Large folder and small fixed blade, that's different. I like it though!

It has basically the same sharpened edge and blade specs as the Military in a package the size of a PM2.

It has a compression lock and flow through contruction so its strong and easy to clean.

It uses LC200N, which is just superb in every way and makes it almost maintenance free.

The handle, while initially gaudy, is not threatening at all in public. I've pulled it out infront of every sheep imaginable and have yet to receive anything but a compliment.

The ergonomics are on point and the full length edge is a cherry on top.

In all honesty, the Caribbean design should be used as a platform for non salt knives aswell.
However, I believe this version is the pinnacle of the design. The other iterations would be cash cows.(Maxamet, S90V, Rex45, etc.)

I could go on, but I'll stop for now.

Anyways, yeah, the Caribbean is just better ;)

i can get on board with all your points, but i can’t get past the looks. even if i found custom scales, i don’t like the way either blade looks with the handle, opened or closed. i know that’s lame, but you have to enjoy the looks of a knife you plan to carry all the time. also, i enjoy the forward choil on my manix and the caribbean is lacking it. i know the yojimbo is too, but it’s a more purpose-built knife and it doesn’t bother me to have it missing there as much. hard to explain, but the caribbean just isn’t for me. thanks for your input though.

No choil used to be a turn off to me, but the Caribbean's blade is so close to the handle, it's like having a choil without the loss of sharpened edge.

As far as the looks, I guess that is a thing to some people. I prefer my carry knives to look like tools. I have prettier knives for occasions that call for them.

Good luck with your search.
