Which ZDP-189 Knife?

#1

Post by dreadpirate »

I was thinking a Stretch ZDP-189 in FRN; what say you guys? Will even consider a knife no longer made on the used market.

My absolute favorite ZDP (or VG-10) knife is the Dragonfly 2. If I could only own one ZDP knife, that would be it. As it is, I own multiples of it, and none of my other Seki models really get any carry time.

Definitely nothing wrong with the Stretch but my favorite ZDP knife is the Caly 3.5. It's kind of pricey though. I was fortunate enough to get one when Amazon was selling them for an amazingly low price.

I have the Caly 3.5, the G10 Stretch 2 and the Endura. The Caly 3.5 beautiful, but too small to hold comfortably (for me), my favorite is the Endura. The Stretch is great in the kitchen though.

My faves in zdp189 are the DF2 and the Stretch2. Hoping a Caly3.5 LW in this steel will be a reality one day.

Stretch 1, if you can find one... better design than the current Stretch 2 imho
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Actually there are some on ebay.. but like 50 dollars more than the Stretch 2; worth it, imho.

I owned an FRN Stretch, but lw design just isn't the real thing for me. I was struggling with the costs of the Caly. When lately the G10 version become discounted due to it being discontinued, it was a no brainer. And a perfect match for my preferences.

I can't really imagine letting it go again.

I think the Slicey Dicey YouTube channel has an ongoing relationship with WMK. I believe he has a code for an additional 10% off. This was taken from his newest video:

"Make sure to visit White Mountain Knives at http://www.whitemountainknives.com and use the discount code SDWMK at checkout for 10% off!"

The deals on the Stretch 2 G10 the two gents checked out for you are very, very good, no doubt!

Nevertheless, and call me quite righthly crazy for this: I personally would still recommend the discountinued Stretch 1 in ZDP and FRN. You can find it on ebay for about the same or a little less money than the G10 Stretch 2 - deal.

I assume that you know more about knifes than I do anyway, but to be on the safe side I want to emphasize once more: Rationally the deal on the G10 Stretch 2 is a very good one, the same money for the Stretch 1 in FRN is NOT!

But I personally am totally ok with linered FRN (though g 10 is prettyer, no question), and the blade- and handleshape of the Stretch 1 has something very unique and usefull I think every Spyderco-Fan should experience. Don´t get me wrong, the Stretch 2 is a very good knife! But it´s a little more "Spyderco mainstream" (which is by itself a good thing), and lacks the uniquness of the Stretch 1; Furthermore, the Stretch 1 packs more edge length in a shorter overfall length, has a more acute tip and for me better ergonomics on the handle.

Maybe you´ll let us know which ZDP model you purchased eventually! They are all good, you can´t go wrong
