What Steel Would You Like To See in the Native Chief?
This is one of my most hoped-for models. I love the Native 5 ergonomics, but have often wished for a longer blade. I can't wait to see this new Native Chief come to light!
I'm sure the first run will be in S30V but it doesn't hurt to dream. :) What steel would you like to see in the upcoming Native Chief?

For me I'd like to see CPM M4. I think M4 would offer a great balance of wear resistance and edge stability in a longer blade. I also appreciate how quickly it is to touch up compared to some of the higher alloyed steels.

Accidentally tapped Maxamet instead of other.
This is a tough situation, lol. I agree that the native chief begs for both wear resistance and toughness, the latter depending on exact geometry of the blade. I don't think it's necessary to group 3v/4v together, but I see how that would free up slots for other options. S90v/s110v could have been linked together as well.
I'm a big fan of 3v but 4v would be much better on this model imo.
M4 is a very solid choice.
Cruwear is always good.
Vanadis 4e for similar reasons.
10v, s110v, s90v, and Maxamet would work as well, depending on geometry. I feel in choosing these steels, you must determine if you want a dedicated slicer (thin blade), or a general use edc folder (thick enough to counteract the "brittleness" of these steels).
I honestly wouldn't complain about s30v either. Can't really go wrong with it. This is the one spydie I want more than any other model and I've kind of accepted that the steel would be s30v, which has a good balance of properties as we all know.
XHP, Elmax or m390 (or variant) would be great as well. I love XHP and feel it has underrated toughness. Elmax has a good balance of properties for a stainless as well but is less likely to be seen. M390 is the best stainless out there if you don't like sXXXv steels, great sharpenability for its wear resistance.
REX 45 could probably work in any platform as well.
This is tough without having the knife in hand. For now, I'd say M4, XHP, or m390. Maybe if it sells out they'll eventually offer a blacked out version in DLC.

Good thoughts Pelagic. Yes I wish there'd be more than just 10 options for poll creation.
Yeah it's tough to make a call without seeing specs like blade stock thickness. I would assume though that it'd be around 3.2 to 3.7mm. If this is the case, I think Maxamet would be great too, although as stated previously I think I'd prefer a more forgiving steel.
What would you think of K390? I don't have any experience with it, but I hear good things about it in the Police 4.

Maybe gallium?
Can you find it and can it cut?
Re: What Steel Would You Like To See in the Native Chief?
I'd like DLC S30V. It works great for me in my Manix XL.
LC200N would probably be awesome too, but I still have yet to test it myself so I can't choose it on theory alone. Whenever the Waterway or new Swick releases that will change :)

3V or 4V. Have neither, curious about both.
Given that sprints will now be made on disco’d models only, I’d rather Sal/Eric not start out with the excellent S30V; the wait for the Chief’s disco could be long. And I don’t think dealers/distributors will jump on a new-to-market and jurisdiction-challenging Chief with any steel in this poll, S30V or not.

From everything I've gathered without actually having used k390 (opinions, cut tests, etc), it is one of the best steels ever created. 10v but tougher? What's not to love? Oh yeah.... Rust. Lol. Wow... All black DLC K390 Native chief? Sign me up.The Meat man wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 2:49 pmPelagic wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 2:34 pmAccidentally tapped Maxamet instead of other.

Hard to go wrong. Really looking forward to this model.

K490
Hard to get, but described as having twice CPM M4's toughness with nearly the same wear resistance.
I've been trying to get some of the knife-steel suppliers to stock it. My buying power is too little...

I voted 3v/4v but would be down with Cru Wear.
XHP would also be killer if it must be stainless. LC200n is a yes but I wouldn't go to the trouble of making it a salt.
None of that high vanadium carbide stuff.

I forgot about that Boker Tree Brand lockback hunter in cru wear until your comment. Just looked it up and I can't find any in stock anymore.

Re: What Steel Would You Like To See in the Native Chief?
I'd love to see a DLC K390 Spyderco. Chief, FRN Police, MANIX XL SPRINT....something along those lines. The steel seriously impresses me across the board in my Police 4, but I know by the time April rolls around it'll see little carry.Pelagic wrote: ↑Sat Dec 08, 2018 6:55 pmFrom everything I've gathered without actually having used k390 (opinions, cut tests, etc), it is one of the best steels ever created. 10v but tougher? I want to give Rex45 another shot. Plus, I really like the burnt orange g10.
