I don't think this is a geometry that should be pushed on a production folder.

I just wanted to show what the limits of the material are, also I wanted a flex feature for this specific design.
I’ll defer to you, Shawn, of course. But do you see hope for 15V in a thin folder like a longer Chaparral?

BTE is more significant than Stock thickness for cutting performance.

I'd rather have ~.100" range and thinner BTE 0.015"
Rather than 0.060" stock and 0.025" BTE.

Asking for both doesn't show respect for what this is.
Also spine flex is not always desired for a EDC pocket knife.

I'm eager to see what this collaboration produces. Are there any details that can be shared?

I have a prototype that I need to ship back to Sal.

Not many details to share until the project gets closer to completion.

I've been excited about this steel for a couple years now and have been continuously tinkering with it and seeing what it can do, I just figured I'd keep updating this thread about 15v steel.

All info and updates certainly are welcome... its definitely getting a lot of us excited about 15V

Does this involve a whole new knife design or are you putting 15V in an existing model?

I sent Sal a CAD file with a folding knife design I created.

Sal made a prototype of the design.

This is especially interesting then. Hopefully we dont have to wait too long to see what you guys came up with.

Any chance you’ll work on a stone or two for 15V?

Also spine flex is not always desired for a EDC pocket knife.
The Chaparral’s spine is 0.079”. Would it not be easier in FFG to achieve 0.015” BTE with this spine?

Or would the Chaparral’s blade-length be bendy at its current 2.80”? If not, what about 3.30” length for, say, a Chaparral XL?

A super-slicy edge-holder would be divine.

You have to factor in for the taper as well, ~0.100 " gives more room for a nice taper to the tip without being too thin for a larger audience.

The bte is more significant than chasing a thin stock

I'm curious how the chosen design will compliment this steel. Takes advantage of all the positive attributes of 15V. Just reading the thread tells me the heat treat can match what spyderco is capable of producing.

Yowza! Impressive flex at that hardness!!

P.s. I like your cutting board too!

Eric said he was going to fit it into the Queue for US production. Will still be a while though as we're pretty backed up.

It will be worth the wait, all the factories do excellent work but the Golden facility was always my favorite.

I did a demonstration with 15v at 65rc with a custom heat treatment protocol.

The edge was at 14.5 dps and 0.006" bte

Since it's difficult to get an idea of how that compares to other steels and knives I did a similar demonstration with a humble classic, Buck 110 in 420hc 58-59rc.

Most consider the Buck 110 to be very thin.

It measures 16.5dps and 0.021" bte.

What is the block of material you are whittling in the test?

African Black Wood

It was a gift from my friend Luong La "Bluntcut Metal Works"

One of my favorite knife makers.
