Should be cool, I'd love to have a spydie in 15v.

Ah! I hadn’t learned that on Forged in Fire :p
They don't show the tempering in the show. The contests have to quench the blades and one of the judges J.Neilson tempers them off screen before the next challenge.
Yeah I heard since he has to use it he wants to make sure it's tempered properly so it doesn't break and injure him. Can't say that's a bad idea.

Yes, tempering is standard practice across the board for knives. They cut it out of the show for entertainment purposes.

I wish they’d show some of the extra steps/details on the “cutting deeper” version of the show. Some of the decisions that go into the setups and tests, why they pick the materials they do, etc.

Nah, the show is for entertainment, not education. The audience limits the amount of details the program can focus on. Just watch to kill time, "read"and "do" if you want to go deeper.

Thanx Shawn,

Would you please email your exact tempering method? We're expecting a sample of 15V and we'd like to try to see if we can do that in production.

sal
Yes, I'll send over the latest protocol.

Thanks Sal.
A BBB/Spyderco collab on 15V?! Yes! :D
Based on the geometry Shawn likes it would be a slicer for sure!

Just for grins I mic’d the bte on my rex45 pm2. Tried a couple different spots down the blade, it was right around .021” to .022” with a dial micrometer...

Cleans up nice. I'll continue testing with the remaining unfinished knives and update the thread.

Another work of art. That thing could probably field dress a dozen bucks before it needed touching up, lol.

Larrin just checked the hardness on a CPM 15v coupon I heat treated and tempered with the custom protocol and it came back 68 HRC

So being that hard and not brittle at the edge and combined with super thin geometry is very exciting.

What, if anything, could Spyderco do via economies of scale to speed up/reduce the cost of the production? It seems like knives made under this protocol require a lot of attention. Having no experience with stuff like this, I don't see how making more than one at a time will lead to improvements regarding price/time to market.

Spyderco is a production company, that is their specialty to figure out.

I am a custom knife maker, it is my specialty to make the best possible regardless of cost.

Each has it's advantages and disadvantages.

It's always interesting to see what comes out when the two work together.

I never thought about 15V running that hard. I thought rc 63-64 was tops. If it has decent stability at that hardness it will be in a whole different category from the steels I've tried and not liked such as S125V @ rc 64. Even at rc 65 or so it's got to be a cutting monster.

I'll send ya a Mule to test Joe. I'll finish that m3-1 steel knife as well unless you would rather have the 15v finished thenstead?
