One disadvantage I can think of purely in regards to the steel for the end user are folks that didn't get the PSA about only using Diamond/CBN to sharpen a blade in 15v at 66.4rc.

We have to remember the apex is bristling with carbide particles at ~84 hrc with ~23% of the volume being made up of those Vanadium Carbide at 3-5 Microns.

How would an Average Joe sharpen this, can you get 15V at 67HRC sharp on Sharpmaker, are diamond/CBN rods required or can someone get this sharp on ceramic rods during say someone's lifetime :)

I had no problem sharpening similar steels on the brown rods. Reprofiling though? RIP your hands, it just won't happen. But just for maintaining your edge the brown rods will work nicely.

In my humble opinion reprofiling anything above 60rc is a p.i.t.a. without cbn/diamond.
As for the sharpmaker, lower grit cbn is what we need for getting new knives reprofiled to 15dps. Easy to maintain once they are there, but getting then there takes forever.

I used cbn rods to reprofile a k390 ladybug, that was a chore to be sure. Results were worth it though! I wouldn’t bother to try 15v without cbn or diamond rods!

I talked to Eric, I told him which batch he needs for the best CPM 15v performance.


I characterized 5 different batches of CPM 15v.

There can be differences in hardness with the same protocol based on the small variation in the nominal chemistry range. This is because small differences in elements can change what goes into solution at the same temperature and temperature ranges, especially when using a specialized heat treatment not in the CPM 15v data sheet.

Even I would like a 15V folder run hard and I'm not a big carbide guy. One of the problems is Shawn explains things so well I start seeing the potential and next thing I'm thinking about 15V. If Spyderco can translate and deliver Shawn's heat treat this will be a new standard in commercial knives. If an company can pull it off it's Spyderco.

Our own testing has shown that Shawn's heat treat does work better.

Completely agree. It seems like too big of a jump from my CBN rods to the brown medium grit, especially on Maxamet and 20CV.

Yea, not at all, 52100 is extremely reactive, 15v is as reactive as 10v ish.

I've been running 10v in the kitchen for a while now it doesn't patina as nicely as a plain carbon steel nor is it as reactive.
