Flicking Spydies with the index finger

In the spirit of Sal's "Immerse": how do you open your knife ?

While I did see a guy opening his Spydies on Youtube with all ten fingers for show, I read that most of you either open your knives with your thumb or middle finger.

When I started using Spyderco knives 2 years ago (with blurple Native and Military), I got used to using my index finger. Comes easy for most smaller Spydercos, and larger frame and liner locks as well:



Now it also works for the large back locks. Like for these 3:

The Tatanka and P4 did so out of the box. While the Tatanka's blade is heavy, the power lock facilitates. And - as a side note - I'm picky about blades being centered and having no play. The Chinook was only flickable after cleaning it out and changing its double teflon to single brass washers.

Anybody else flick with their index finger ?

I like the index finger flick, I like being able to do it, but I don't always do it.



Honestly these days 99.999% of the time the way I open my Spydie is by pushing the plunge lock button.

99 times out of 100 i use my thumb. Depending on people surrounding me or not i open it slow all the way or flick it open. Every once in a blue moon i Spydie drop open. Can't personally see the point of using other fingers.

I also am a big fan of the index open. I feel like after the flick my hand is closer to the grip I most often use in EDC applications.

Depends on the knife. Some(times) with the thump, some(times) with the middle finger, some(times) with the spydie drop.

I've never gotten the appeal of flicking a knife open with the thumb, index or middle finger. I can do it, but I see no reason to. It's no faster than using the "normal" method.

I open them with my thumb, no flick.

Every once in a while I do a two handed open slowly if I'm trying to not surprise people by whipping a blade out lightning fast.

I'm quite partial to the spydie drop. I use a pinch grip a lot so it is a very fluid way for me to open a knife. Otherwise, I really just use my thumb. I can flick whichever way but dont.

I have rather short fingers, so the only finger that works for me is the thumb. But I like to use gravity with the PM2 and the Manix, pushing the locking mechanisms. Or the flipper on my Advocate or Southard. And a small number of :spyder: s even open holding the knife very tightly and catapulting them quickly down and then up - I believe this is called spyderdropping?! :)

Remark: since most spydies I own are actually illegal to carry where I live, I never flick them open in public but use both hands. But I do like to flick them in the privacy on my home (which is legal). :p

But to answer the OP, I just flick with thumb or middle finger.

With index finger I have no good/secure grip of the knife.

I open them with my thumb, no flick.

I'm about 50/50 on flicking with middle finger and using my thumb.

Mostly middle finger flicking, it's just so natural and easy for me. My lock backs are smaller so thumb on them. I can spydie flick them, but it's not very practical and does not have 100% succes rate.

How the **** do you index finger flick? It gives you bad grip on the knife and the finger tends to get stuck in the hole. You guys have some weird hands or something?

When I try to flick my lockbacks with my index finger the resistance often makes my finger slip which can result in some nasty cuts on the finger behind. At least that's been my experience.

This thread is making me wonder about the Ikuchi and how it's going to be flicked open with the thumb like flicking a BIC lighter...I wonder if it will truly be that easy probably will have a learning curve to it since I'm assuming it's non-assisted opening. I guess we also need a pinky flick knife now too
