Who else is excited about the FRN Sage that Spyderco plans to make?

Postby SpyderEdgeForever » Mon Nov 12, 2018 1:46 pm

When I read the post where sal said they plan to produce a Sage with FRN handles, I was very excited. Who else likes this idea and is looking forward to it?

Which lock will it feature? I'm sure I'll get one, but FRN is neither a huge plus, or minus in my book... I hope they choose a cool color!

Depends on the lock. I love FRN.

Would love to see CTS-XHP on it. But I realize that’s highly unlikely.

I'm interested. I just got a Sage 2. I like the size (blade and handle), but I don't know if I would get one.

Well, here are some snips from a conversation in the "Sal asks you to design a Spyderco" thread:

Hi Jason,

I've been nagging Cliff for a collaboration for years. Can't get him to bite. I think it wold be a fun project. Maybe you can help? He can tell me what he thinks and I can turn it into a model. His brain, my hands?

Also, regarding the high hollow. I agree with you that it might be the most efficient cutting tool. Chris Reeve has always liked his high hollow.
The high hollow keeps the blade thin for a long space and what it gives up in strength, it makes up for having that thin blade at and near the edge. Certainly better for skinning. Like the Hamaguri (convex), the geometry of a blade has much more depth than is originally perceived. The reason is the friction alongside the blade in a cut.

SSssooo...for the purpose of discussion, Let's pick a model and make a high hollow? Whatchathink?

(May be better in another thread?)

sal
Sal, I think a high hollow grind XHP blade with the current 3.2mm stock in a Native 5 LW could lead to interesting comparisons against the current Chaparral LW with its thinner stock FFG XHP blade. Or perhaps a Sage with current 3mm stock, but the switch to high hollow grind XHP to put against the Chap's FFG 2mm stock XHP. Doing that would remove further variables since they'd both be made at the Taichung plant with all the same heat treat and finishing processes.

Hi Jason, Ugaarguy,

We've got a new Sage FRN in-the-works. Might be an interesting test?

I'm speculating CBBL.

Slipjoint is not a "lock" type, right? Seems the the two most probable designs that FRN gets other than back lock.

Mmmm. I think not. The whole Native family doesn't do it for me on aesthetics. Might be a case of need to hold it to really know. Para 3 to me is the very definition of Spyderco. I’m happy there.

I'm in for the sage frn all the way!! I love the series, but they are all too nice to take to work. Frn would solve this and turn it into a hard user for me.

?????

While there are similarities the Sage and Native are two different families

They’re cousins. More similar to each other than the paramilitary and Delica families that I’m familiar with.

Not as excited as I am for a FRN Caly 3.5! ;)

I'm super excited about the Sage in FRN. I love FRN, despite all it's naysayers. It's a super practical, lightweight, affordable material. All my spydies but 2 (delica titanium and Paramilitary) are in FRN.

Thanks! I've been collecting spydercos on and off for a while and thought I'd take a look :) I've had a serious uptick in the knife bug lately!

I'm interested. Love my Sage 5.
Definitely interested in what lock.
Kinda hoping for a power lock.

I'm even more excited about reading about the possible high height hollow grind in xhp.oh boy.
I own an assisted knife and am embarrassed to admit I enjoy it.

The Power-Lock was invented by Kimiuki Sakai and can only be made in Japan.

Interesting! I was under the impression you invented it, Sal. Thank you for the information. I'll be researching that maker.

Depends. If they brought back the Sage IV in FRN with no other changes or made a new Sage with the Crawford lock, I'd be extremely interested. Otherwise can't really think of any other locks that would excite me, at least none that would be possible to use in a Sage.
