Recommendation needed - Hunter/Fisherman Fixed Blade for retirement gift.

#1

Post by Zatx »

Hi guys. I need your expert opinions on a fixed blade knife as a retirement gift for a co-worker that is an outdoorsman. He hunts, fishes, camps, etc. Here are my thoughts as far as requirements go:

  • Must be available now, so no upcoming or hard to find discontinued items.
  • Stainless blade steel.
  • Heirloom quality (so no plastic/FRN type materials on the knife, but on the sheath is acceptable.)
  • Price isn't a factor.
Also, a recommendation on where I might be able to purchase the knife and have it engraved, or at least where I can send it for engraving.

Thank you!

If I was buying one for myself it'd be the Bradley Bowie, its seems about perfect.
It is slightly less stainless than some though, so it depends where you live.

Failing that the Proficient looks nice too (and the carbon fiber handle is a nice upgrade, it'd make a good present).

If you can find the sprig at a good price still... hop on it! They sold like candy when they got discontinued, but it's literally a bird and trout knife.

If not that... you can still find the bushcraft, but that would not be an ideal fishman's knife. However, it is an excellent oudoor woodman's tool.

The sprig is sweet,, proficient could be used for all his needs :).. And if the proficient feels as Great in the hand as the bushcraft (I think its the same handle) he Will cherish it for the rest if his outdoor years.
I'm a hunter/fisher/outdoor type of guy,, and if someone gave me one of those i would cry.
Price is no factor,, i wish i had coworkers like you.. But that impossible since im selfemployed 😂..

But 01 is not stainless at all.

The Proficient really does check all his boxes.

Proficient would be the best.

I also think the Moran would be phenomenal for what you want butttt frn handles.

Another great choice that hasn't been brought up is the Serrata. One of Spyderco's most underrated and forgotten fixed blades. It's a great knife.
