Is it Time for a New Camo Pattern?

The primary utility uniforms of the US Army and the US Air Force now feature the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) originally developed for use in Afghanistan. OCP is very similar to the popular MultiCam pattern that many are familiar with. The US Marines and the US Navy also have their own "MultiCam type" patterns which they are using more and more. This is true for the armed forces of many other nations also.

I'm in the US Air Force, and when I was using my digital camo PM2 the other day, it occurred to me that the camouflage pattern used in the Spyderco Military/PM2/P3 series of knives is outdated now. For those who might not know, this pattern is very similar to the one that the US Army used to use. As a fan, I would love to see Spyderco offer the Military series of knives in a new pattern. As a military member, I prefer to carry gear that is coordinated.

I'm interested in hearing what others think. Would you like to see Spyderco offer a new camo pattern for the Military/PM2/P3 series of knives? If so, what patterns do you like? Another option would be to phase out the digital camo and make the OD Green used in the new limited edition PM2 a standard offering for the entire Military series. And then there's Coyote Brown...I love Coyote Brown.

Again, I'm just curious to hear what others think.

Picture: The PM2 in this picture features a digital camouflage pattern very similar to the one that the US Army used to use. It was phased out several years ago. The backpack in the background is MultiCam. Many armed forces currently use a "MultiCam type" pattern. MultiCam is copyrighted, so using it would probably drive cost up. Perhaps Spyderco could create its own "MultiCam type" pattern to avoid this.

I’m always down for some more Camo! I’d like to see maybe some of the “urban” or “polar snow” digital Camo..

I think new camo styles would be interesting. Perhaps more than one. A digital, one similar to what you're recommending and a white "snow" camo would be sweet IMO.

Woodland camo is my favorite

I see no reason not to support this. I'd probably pick up a Manix or something if they did OCP scales and DLC blades.

I like that camo you're showing better than digicam. Would purchase and it does make sense.
Heavily heavily support od green or coyote as standard colors.

Cami is hard because it alienates a certain percentage of the market.

I can see sprint runs being done but not sure how how many needed to make it viable.

I'm not suggesting that Spyderco should stop offering the Military/PM2/P3 series in black. My recommendation is that they should update their camouflage version. For those who might not know, the camo version is a regularly available option and has been for a few years now.

Perhaps Sal will let us know how well the camo version sells. I've always been under the impression that it sells well. In fact just recently I was looking at PM2 photos on Instagram, and I was surprised by how many pictures of the camo version I saw.

When Spyderco released the Military and the PM2 in camo, it made total sense to me because they selected a camouflage pattern which was very similar to what the US Army was using at that time. However, the US Army now uses a variation of the MultiCam pattern, and everybody else seems to be following suit. My thought is that Spyderco should consider developing a new camo pattern that better reflects current military trends.

It's probably true that military members comprise a small percentage of the market, but I suspect there are plenty of knife enthusiasts who think military "stuff" is cool and will buy it for that reason alone. Of course that's just conjecture. Again, perhaps Sal will let us know whether or not the camo version of the Military/PM2/P3 is a good seller.

Picture: This is the old US Army uniform. Compare its camouflage pattern to the current Military/PM2/P3 camo version pictured in my original post.

Picture: This is the new US Army uniform. It is a variation of the MultiCam pattern. The US Air Force recently adopted it, and the US Marines and US Navy have their version of it too. I think the Spyderco Military/PM2/P3 series would look great in this configuration. It would also bring it up to date.

The 'wannabe' or 'try hard' market is huge, maybe bigger than the military market but from my understanding is based a lot on looks but very price based.

ie looks cool but costs peanuts.

I do like the Multicam pattern

I’m interested in other patterns. Not sure if spyderco is limited by the available g10 supply.

I mean if we're keeping up with the army uniform changes they'd all be sprint runs anyway ;)

I'd assume availability of g10 is the biggest factor.

i never cared for the camo pattern handle scales, but i get why people like them. personally, i'd rather see more of what we saw in the recent para 3 exclusive (i forget where) with the od scales and brown blade coating. the colors are there and would match a multicam uniform, but i think it looks cleaner. man, that knife was beautiful.

I always like camo patterns on the right types of knives like the PM2 and Millie. Care must be taken because it can make the knife look cheap. I have always wanted Mossy Oak or something. However, the new US military pattern would be a good one to have, as well.

(I wonder why they got rid of the digi cam? It was touted as being the best ever.)

Definitely! Good idea to update to multicam pattern.

Yes, I'm always up for new and updated stuff, especially camo.

My first Para 2 when they first came out was digicam because it was literally the only one I could get my hands on. I've also had a digi/DLC Military. The pattern is only printed on the top of the G10, underneath it's just natural/jade G10. I wonder if availability of another type of camo is even an option.

I always wanted a white, red or blue urban style camo pattern on a spyderco. I think white urban camo handle with DLC blade and black hardware would look pretty **** clean.

Would there be any interest in an Orange Camo pattern? I'm thinking a Cutlery Shoppe exclusive in orange camo would be a hit!

I tend to agree with you on that one Doc. I've got the digital camo handle on one of my Military models and I like it OK. However I've wondered over the years if putting a camo pattern on a knife handle is really necessary? I guess maybe if you are an avid hunter it might be a good thing. But I never wear any of my knives on the outside if I'm hunting. But a change from the digital camo might be in order. Anything can get commonplace over time.

The Mossy Oak camo idea is one that kind of appeals to me. I think I could go with that one. If Spyderco and them could come to terms.

I love Mossy Oak, but I think that would be more fitting on a hunting knife. A military theme makes more sense to me on the Military/PM2/P3.
