2004 Model Survey

Well it’s that time of the year again when we have to make our decisions regarding which models will be carried for 2004 and which will be discontinued. In order to make room for the new designs, older designs must be disco’d. As in the past, getting opinions from dealers, distributors and ELUs (End Line Users) is helpful in our decision making process. The new designs for 2003 that are not yet out have not been listed as they will be carried into 2004 unless there is a severe glitch. Would you be so kind as to indicate your opinions on the models listed below. Thank you in advance.

This is about the only part of Spyderco involving us users so much that I don't like <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
It some how makes me feel responsible if a model gets discontinued.

So here are the models I would very much like to KEEP :
C07P Police Stainless
C08S Harpy Stainless
C10P Endura Stainless
C10PBK Endura FRN
C11P Delica Stainless
C11PBK Delica FRN
C28P Dragonfly Stainless
C29P Cricket Stainless
C29PBK Cricket FRN
C36GPE Military CPM-S30V
C41PBK Native FRN
C65P Lum Chinese Folder
C69GP Lil’ Temperance Leaf
C71PTI Salsa – Titanium
C75P Kiwi
FB09P Ronin

My top 5 keepers, in order of best first would be :
1) C71PTI Salsa – Titanium
2) C36GPE Military CPM-S30V
3) C65P Lum Chinese Folder
4) C41PBK Native FRN
5) C69GP Lil’ Temperance Leaf

Walk softly, carry a big stick.

Keep the Endura /Delica series NO MATTER WHAT
They're the workhorse"meat & potatos of <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>.
Keep the Salsas too!!! They may be a sleeper success story!!

More to follow. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I'd vote to disco the Delica and Endura trainers... neither are really an MBC knife anyway. I also think you ought to whack the colored Jesters and Ladybugs, and finally, probably my most unpopular suggestion... get rid of the Kiwi.

NOTE: * is keeper, ** has details, possible gone

*Keep the c10&11 lineup.
*the c07 has been a keeper for a long time.
*c08 could be replaced by the c77 completly. but could have drying vents added(or would that not work?).
**c12 mat can be replaced by the c77. covers both defense and utility with a stronger tip.
**c13 can be replaced by the trakker if/when it comes out.
**c14 is being overshadowed by the assist models. I'd say wait on consumer response to the new c79 and c82
*c17 is a keeper
*c28 is a keeper. it's the ideal size for a wide range of users and uses.
**c29 frn can be gone. at 5usd less(than ss) with online dealers, the majority of users will probably flock to the ss
*c36 is a keeper.
*c41 I'd say wait on response to the native 3(c78).
**c45 see c14
**c46 is overshadowed by fb03. Are the sales of the c46 holding enough to keep it?
**c63 isn't a biggie from what I've read. The few that have it carry it and love it, as was the c52(small group of fanatics hoping to hold on to it...)
**c64 could be taken down to 1 version. The rev-s isn't deep enough(as the cricket) and there is little difference from the drop point. As the co-pilot and peg line up was taken to 1 edge type, this could be also for a last year or so d/p on sales and response.
*c65 is a sheeple friendly user. keeper.
**c66, don't even recall the elu response to be very big.
*c68 is a small crew, yet I'd imagine a large part of the sales(considering the sku variety)
*c69 is a keeper. it's the ideal city knife when you want power without laoding a 6" in your pocket.
*c71 is just starting to be realized, give it another year or so.
*c72 is an important step in evolution. given the large amount of european knuts it's going to be selling big when it's finally realized.
*c73 had it for a few days in a passaround. could be large for hunters.
*c75, gents folder. keeper
*c77 see posts for c08, c12

*jbk upgrade from the lbk. available in PE, which was a kicker for the lbk.
**lbk see jbk

*The fixed blade line should stay as is. the fb01/02 are the only ones old enough to give opinions on and they're keepers.

**t01p could be the only version out. most multi-tools are mainblade PE, and how many elu's only carry a single knife, most have a serrated anyways.
*t02 is too new to form an opinion on, haven't handled, or even seen other than online pics.

**kitchen line up, I haven't worked with but have heard opinions. I'd say keep the santoku at least, and a utility. maybe sell in pairs for a slight discount?

Sorry Sal, but I really can't decide which <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>s should be put on the discontinue list....love'em all. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> However, I do agree with Zrexxer that the Endura/Delica trainers should be axed.

The Police/Endura/Delica series are all far too valuable to mess with. The Salsa seems like it could be extremely popular, given a year to come into its own, as it were.

As for the ax-able ones, I'd include the Deli Trainer, at least one color of Jester and Ladybug, along with the CE Rench.

This is assuming that I HAVE to delete a few. As it were, I could expand <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>'s line to several hundred models quite quickly. *Drools, thinking of a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Trapper in S30V and CF* <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

By the time you read this, you'll have already read it.

C64SBK2 MeerKat – Reverse S
Lum Chinese Folder unless it it offered with G10 scales
C69GP2 Lil’ Temperance Trailing Point
C69GS2 Lil’ Temperance Trailing Point haven't owned one but from what I have seen most people perfer the leaf blade.
C73GP Impala with Guthook
C73GPS Impala with Guthook
C73GPS2 Impala sorry but they just aren't the Wegner.Bring back the Wegner with an esentric(?) pivot.

I also think the Delica & Endura trainers can go. I'd also drop the Ladybugs since they don't give you anything the Jester doesn't,and I prefer the Jester's blade. The SpydeRenches also need to go. I'd just can't get into a multi-tool that needs to be essembled for use. Perhaps instead you could do a collaboration w/Leatherman and put Spyder blades on their Wave. That would be sweet.

For changes,I'd like to see new colors for the Salsa and Military. For the Salsa, one or two standard colors w/another one or two that change yearly,or maybe an OD green/black blade 'militarized' one. The Millie I'd like to see w/OD and desert tan handles, plus a black blade.

The Wegner design is being licensed to Blade-tech, which is continuing to produce an evolution of the model.

Models I think you should keep:

SS delica and endura-nice for the money.
FRNR delica and endura-they are just so popular-do you have something better to replace them with?

Progrip stainless
SS dragonfly-another nice one for the dollar.
Military-keep but a redesign with a compresson lock and stronger build would be good.
Native SS- maybey add an adjustable pivot and change blade steel and this would be very popular.
Chinnock 2

PLEASE-do not disc. the Lil temperance!

Kiwi-this fills a nich but is a little expensive.

And for god sakes, please do not disc. the Moran featherweights, they are two of the best hunting knives ever.

Fred perrin-also a great fixed blade.

You guys are being too gentle. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Sal needs to cut 25% to 35% of the listed lineup. So around 30 knives on that list need to go.

OK, that seems to be around 30 knives. Here goes. I'll list reasons at the end.

C08SBK Merlin FRN
C10P Endura Stainless
C10PS Endura Stainless
C10S Endura Stainless
C11P Delica Stainless
C11PS Delica Stainless
C11S Delica Stainless
C11TR Delica Trainer
C45SBK Rescue 79mm Black
C45SBL Rescue 79mm Blue
C45SOR Rescue 79mm Orange
C71BLP Salsa – Blue
C71BLPS Salsa – Blue
C71CBP Salsa – Cranberry
C71CBPS Salsa – Cranberry
C64JPBK MeerKat
C64JSBK MeerKat
C64PBK2 MeerKat – Reverse S
C64SBK2 MeerKat – Reverse S
JBKP Jester – Black
JBKS Jester – Black
JGRP Jester – Lime Green
JGRS Jester – Lime Green
LBK Ladybug – Black
LBL Ladybug – Blue
LRD Ladybug - Red
T01P SpydeRench
T01PS SpydeRench
T01S SpydeRench
K04SBK Utility Knife – Black
K05SBK Small Utility Knife – Black
K05SRD Small Utility Knife – Red
K08P Santoku
K09P Paring Knife
C41PBK Native FRN
C41PSBK Native FRN

OK, that's 36. Here's why. I think redundancy is the main reason.

The kitchen knives are in an oversaturated market.
The Natives are being replaced.
The SpydeRench is also in a fierce market. The mini's are being overdone by others.
The Meerkat is cute, but...
Too many Salsa's.
The 93 is a better knife, and with the Assist coming out, the 79 has seen it's day.
The stainless Delica's and Endura's either need to be upgraded to better steel, or eliminated. Pricepoint may be a problem.
The Merlin is redundant.

Thats alot of blades that have to go. I realized awile back that there would be only a few people in this world that could afford every Spydie. Just too many come out every year.
Variety is the spice of life, if getting rid of 30+ models is necessary than so be it. Hey how many of us would love the original G-10 Bob T back in production? LOTS!!! You(SAL) and your company have to change with the times, no matter what you get rid of I will still collect because you have good designs coming out every year.
My only suggestion DO NOT GET RID OF: delica and endura both handle versions, these are you meat and potatoes, they are true Spyderco's. Also the police and military, great blades that can't get enough praise.
I think we all dread not getting that one knife that just grabs you from the moment you see it, my suggestion collect those ones first then get everything else that is available. Good luck on such a difficult task.

I posted a full reply on Bladeforums, so I will not repeat the whole thing here, except to say that the Gunting models are quite indispensible due to the unique purpose of the knife. I just wish more people were aware of what an excellent and tough EDC the Gunting can be. And, this is controversial for sure, lose the Police. The Mili made it obsolete long ago, and the blade tip is far too delicate for a "tactical" knife.
