It just takes the edge right off.
I had just gotten to work this morning, a truck dropped off about 10 pallets of inventory. I brought them all inside with the forklift, and started cutting the hard plastic straps holding them tightly together. I started popping through these straps one after another very quickly, then hit the last one that took a little more force, it popped through, I just figured my edge had faded from a hair popping edge, to working a edge.. It was unknown to me but, the last strap was a steel strap that I had just cut. And my microbevel or edge with any sharpness at all was totally gone afterwards. It cut through it, and took my entire sharp edge with it! No I’ve got no knife for today unfortunately. Anyone ever have this happen? I’m not sure a microbevel at 20 degrees will bring it back. May have to go through all the steps again tonight. Anyways, I hated that strap! Now I can’t cut a thing for the rest of the day.

Ouch!
Steel straps will do that... you're probably going to have to re-set the bevel on that knife. If you have way to view the edge under high magnification (10x or higher) that will help you evaluate the damage and how much repair will be required.
The plastic straps can do some edge damage as well, many have fiberglass in their matrix.

Re: It just takes the edge right off.
Which blade were you using?
S30V, VG10, M4, XHP, BD1, Cruwear, Elmax, Maxamet, 204P, H1, K390, A11, Rex45, LC200N, M390, 20CV, BD1N, S45VN waiting to afford MagnaCut
Re: It just takes the edge right off.
Yep, I did this with my S110V Military, cutting what I thought was just a simple rubber door seal that ended up having a steel band inside it. It cut through but wrecked the heck out of the edge. These sorts of situations are a good reason to carry either a second knife or a sharpening tool with you.

It didn’t chip the edge to my surprise. I wish I had a magnification device. Unfortunately I don’t, I’m gonna throw it on the Wicked edge when I get home and do the usual. 15DPS/20DPS

Re: It just takes the edge right off.
I’m ordering another knife Friday. I need a legitimate backup knife for my PM2 Blurple. I may just buy a Military haha! Or PM3 still unsure. I leave the Tenacious, and resilience at home as they don’t work well for long.

Re: It just takes the edge right off.
In my case a Goldenstone would have taken a lifetime to fix the edge damage. Sometimes a backup knife is a better option when edge damage is more than a pocket stone can fix, or more than you can fix quickly and get back to work.

Re: It just takes the edge right off.
Ive never used the Golden Stone sharpener.
Maybe one of the Pocket Stone solutions for a quick fix and then a complete 'overhaul' when at home.
… but yes, a spare knife would be the quickest fix*
*Yet another reason to buy a knife!
("I need an identical spare knife for work. Muscle memory and all that!")

Re: It just takes the edge right off.
I'm sure that you know, but I did not...you have to watch out for those steel bands. I cut one when working in a lumber yard and it snapped back and stuck right in my arm. If it had hit me in the eye, I'd have lost my eye. They're treacherous!

Manix 2 LW would be a great back-up! Even available in S90V or S110V for just a bit more than the basic BD1 version.
My pick for a touch up stone is the EZE-LAP 1x4" fine hone, they're cheap and effective, small enough to have close at hand and comes with a leather sleeve.

Different type of steel banding (more of a steel wire) but I once saw one pop off a bail of corrugated and swing around and slice a guy's forearm like a scalpel. It happened so fast he said he didn't feel it until he saw the blood. Straps and bands are usually under a lot of tension, it's a lot of energy that can do damage under the right circumstances.

Re: It just takes the edge right off.
You need Maxamet if you want to cut metal with it. :)
Re: It just takes the edge right off.
Seriously? Lol what about REX45? Vs Maxamet? Vs 4V? Which is better? That may be a option as a backup. I’m going to order something by Friday for sure.
What’s the toughest steel around available in a PM2, or PM3, or equivalent Spyderco. I can’t jump ship to a different brand. I’m a fanboy, and I love the spyderco hole 🕳 on the blade.
The strap was not under much tension, if any at all. Here’s the damage! I just got home, I’m about to fix it.

Yikes, that's ugly! Can't believe that much damage to S110V on a single strap.

Re: It just takes the edge right off.
For me, cutting metal, Maxamet beats both Rex45 and 4v (and M4).
Getting a PM2 or PM3 in one is pretty hard at the moment, though. You'd have to go to a Manix 2 LW or Native LW to find any availability.
Another thing to try would be K390, which is readily available in the Police 4.
Re: It just takes the edge right off.
I'm not trying to dissuade you from buying another knife but there's no reason you shouldn't be able use your Tenacious or Resilience as a back up. They don't get dull that fast.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!
Re: It just takes the edge right off.
You should get one of those pocket diamond sharpeners. You could back a working edge in no time. Having a backup knife is great as well, but that can get dull too. And since you already got a Tenacious/Resilience it makes even more sense to buy a pocket sharpener than a new knife.
Re: It just takes the edge right off.
Good as new! I use my knives heavily guys. She is back to looking good again! Fixed the edge, it is hair shaving sharp, and chip free. It’s ready for tomorrow. I wouldn’t know where to start without my wicked edge lol. I’m spoiled.
I revbeveled the knife at 14.75 degrees each side with 200 grit diamonds. Did a couple light strokes with 600 grit. Then stropped it about 50 times at 13.75 degrees. It is a Super sharpie!
