One-hand openers increasingly illegal
A lot of European countries have started to ban knives that can be comfortably opened with one hand. I live in one such country: Denmark.
It also happens that the Spyderco Delica knife is just under the legal maximum blade length for a public carry folder here and in most other countries with this kind of law.
In the light of the initiative with the Pride, I suggest a version of the Delica without the round hole, perhaps the spyder logo engraved in its place.

martin, are you suggesting that a knife that has an engraved, concave design as an opening device would result in a slower opening and as a result be looked at more favorably by the law?
It would not be a bad idea to engrave the spyder logo as a replacement for the trademark Spyderco hole (similar to the David Boye folders, e.g., the Eagle Wing) if that's what it takes to make the knife legal.

Does that include thumbstud openers as well, or just hole openers?

I don't suggest a concave surface instead of a hole, simply make a circular grove, maybe painted black, and laser-etch the spyder logo in the circle, still same surface elevation as the rest of the blade.
This would both make the knife legal in these countries, and also still ensure the knife would be plainly recognisable as a spyderco knife, just with a circle instead of the hole. Some kind of non-removable insert thats plane with the blade would work as well.
You would then have to use two hands to open the knife, but still be able to legally buy the amazing products that are recognised as spyderco knives.
To add to that, I'm a great fan of these knives. I already do own a Delica, though I have a special collectors license. I don't feel this is doing the knife any justice, it was made as a tool, its a shame it can't be used as one in these countries.
Câmpina: As for studs/discs/etc, yes they are all illegal, they can be opened with one hand, this makes them illegal, same goes for some leatherman tools. Most of the one hand openers, you can remove the disc or stud by simply screwing/grinding it off, this is done by the dealers, but it's obviously easier than removing the round hole from a spyderco knife

Hi Martin,
I am guessing that you have a "Blank Vaaben tilladelse" permid...-am I right? You can not, any longer, collect onhand openers! The new permids coming out this year states that all onehand openers are illigal to own, collect or carry. The police will bill you 6000,- Dkr. for carry, and 600,- for just having it at home in a display case...
SAD BUT TRUE!!

" I love the Police. ****, they get most of my knives.." ;)

voxnaes: Yep, you are right about the permit I have, but it is possible to get one that allow you to own a onehand opening knife. At least according to armsgallery.dk I plan on applying for one this coming week. But still, you cannot carry it as a personal tool, which I find increasingly annoying.
You cannot carry a fixed blade either. All this is really stupid, theres nothing preventing you from carrying a 15cm long really sharp screwdriver in public as long as you have some reasonable excuse.

But almost any knife can be opened with one hand! I can Drop a Buck or something similar easier than my s, and even the innocent Opinel can be opened with a simple tap on a boot or hand.

here in italy EVERYTHING is illegal if you dont have a real reason -such goin fishing or diving..-and also in such case, you should carry the knife in a way that is not ready to use..
but most of people dont care..of course probally a cop let you go with a Jester,or Cricket,or Dragonfly..but absolutely not with a Delica or a Native or even a Spydercard serrated -that i use- could be a problem for its "vicious looking"...

Sword and Shield: I agree fully, just about anything can be opened with one hand, but I think the line goes at knives that are _designed_ to be opened with one hand. Butterflys, switchblades, dropblades, spyderco like folders, etc., are all illegal. Unfortunately this attitude is spreading throughout a lot of european countries, I funnily the same countries allow lockback folders, while the countries who dont allow these are indifferent to the fact that they can be opened with one hand.
The moment lockbacks are banned in this country Ill give up and just wear a fixed 6 inch blade tanto at all times =P
disorder: Oh wow, thats really sad.. The only place such rules would apply (vicious looks, etc) here, would be if you wanted to take one aboard an airplane.

You hold it so that the blade is facing tip-up, and away, like the start of a Drop. A firm tap on a boot will cause the blade to swing out about 45 degrees, which cna then be thumbed open the rest of the way.

This is exactly what I don't understand. Denmark fought oppression in the 1940's and today they are making illegal types of knives. In Australia they have all but eliminated firearms. I guess outlawing knives is next for the Aussies. Obviously the real people have lost touch with their "elected" officials. I would bet that most European countries have 100 times the deaths from drugs than knife attacks. Here in America, it is probably 1000 OD's to one knife attack. For everyone, don't just "chat" campaign and vote. Or as they say in New Hampshire "Live Free or Die"
