What's Next for the Chaparral?

#1

Post by carrot »

With the Chaparral Titanium discontinued and the Chaparral Lightweight being a seemingly huge hit, what's next for the Chaparral? Surely there are plenty more handle variants on the way!

What would you guys like to see? What do you think is most likely?

Personally speaking I'd love to see the Chaparral with smooth, rounded paper or canvas micarta scales. I think micarta strikes a wonderful balance between being smooth and grippy at the same time. But I'm aware that there are a lot of cool materials for handles these days like CTek and others. What would the greater community like to own?

I don't remember exactly which thread, but I know Sal has talked about a Chapparal with buffalo horn scales.

A micarta Chap has been a grail pretty much since I joined here. Someday...

Skipped the Raffir Noble to wait for the lw and now that I've had it for a while (and it's fantastic) I'm thinking about the RN again. Would want to hand pick though, specifically need a good "back" side since the clip will be flipped for lefty carry.

Always though a brass or copper one would be cool. Not sure what you do about the weight though. Maybe brass or cu over nested skeletonized ti liners? I'm sure that would be cheap, lol. :p

Potentially very interested. Picturing it smooth, but I guess we'll see.

If I recall correctly, I think copper fell through for some reason. I wonder if a copper squeak or urban could be made?

Oh boy! Linen micarta and I'd be day one buyer. G10 and Cruwear and my heart starts racing.

What I'd really like to see someday though is a Chaparral LW Wharncliffe!

New steel or handle material or both?

I love the knife and XHP is a great steel that gets very sharp. But it's not very well know by the general public and it is not 100% stainless. I think M390 would make it a better seller.
I personally would love to see a Salt version in LC200N. They have all the materials in Taichung to make that happen.

The Chaparral is all about showcasing different handle materials. A change in steel would probably also bring a new generation.

I think a bolstered option would be classy for this gents knife. Titanium bolster, ivory G10?

Is it still, though? The latest FRN model seems to have woken people up to the utility of that size and thickness blade; as well as the ergonomics.

With that particularly thin blade, one would think it narrows down the steel options.

TBH I might rather have a Caly Jr in a more practical steel than the SuperBlue.

Hopefully the new Chappies will lose that non-aesthetic blade spine hump :)

I'm all in for new scales materials on the Chap! Never mind the steel, it's plenty good enough IMO

More LC200N is always good. Not sure this is the knife for it, though?

Funny, on the CTS-XHP I learned a lesson. Eventually I had a moment where I realized, woah, now I get why they chose that steel. With almost all the choices Spyderco makes, they're deliberate and well-tested (and it's only done when it's done, not to meet a schedule). It's that I just haven't learned enough to appreciate the choices. So maybe the general public will come around, too. Sal seems OK with that.
