Full flat grind, full of scratches?

#1

Post by tps3443 »

I know people pick steels over corrosion resistance, and holding a edge for an extended time, or maybe being easy to sharpen!

Since Spyderco almost always uses a full flat grind.

Why not pick a steel because it is less scratch resistant?

Are these harder steels less prone to scratching?

My PM2 S110V does not have a single scratch, you could look for several minutes not a mark on it. I dunno how, considering I’ve gone through staples, dirt packed cardboard. It looks brand new. But my Tenacious got its first several scratches within hours of owning it. by wiping the blade off with my shirt maybe lol, maybe in my pocket. It has so many scratches now I just dunno where they all came from.

Is this true? Or am I crazy?

"Why not pick a steel because it is less scratch resistant"

Because most knife USERS couldn't give a **** about scratches on a blade or sharpening marks.

No point being scratch free if it doesn't cut or cuts and goes blunt in 2 minutes of cardboard cutting.

My H1 that is 1 week old as used by a forum member. Marks, so what ? I didn't expect him to know whether he wanted to keep it without using it. I bought it for corrosion resistance, not looks.

Abrasion resistance is one of the ways a knife dulls. Some do care about abrasion resistance but more for its effect on edge holding than for looks. That said, my S110V Mule has a ton of fine scratches. Even the most wear resistant steels will scratch. If they didn’t then it would be imposssible to sharpen them.

I personally think a knife looks better when it shows some wear and tear. Whether or not a knife shows wear is pretty much the last thing I care about. It is easy enough to refinish a flat ground blade with a satin finish anyway. That is one of the reasons I avoid coated blades and stonewashed finishes.

I think Killer summed it up very well.

I hate scratches on blades, scales, pocket clips ... but only till I notice the first one then I relax and enjoy the knife. :)

It's about the hardness of the steel compared to the media it's contacting. Like trying to scratch glass with a diamond or trying to scratch a diamond with glass. The hardest wins. A lot of sand has quartz in it that is of higher hardness than some steels and lower than others.

It's why sharpening stones or sandpaper cuts steel. The bits of SiC or AlOX or CBN are harder than the steel which cuts it...a lot. But a couple of pieces here or there would just scratch it.

It's why you can use Silicon carbide to sharpen a knife loaded with Vanadium carbides even though vanadium is harder than silicon. You're not cutting the vanadium, that's impossible with silicon. You're cutting the steel matrix which is softer than the silicon.

S110V not only has a higher amount of vanadium in it than 8Cr, it's a harder blade. Quartz or whatever in dirt has an easier time scratching the steel in the tenacious than the pm2. But the tenacious will be much easier to sharpen.

I have nicer knives that get babied but most are users. Depends on what kind of knife it is. A nice gents knife that sees light use is easy to keep in good shape.

Like Bloke said, the first one hurts the most and looks out of place. The next few still look off. Once it has a bunch you just stop noticing. :)

I like the way scratches look on DLC. Not a fan of them on satin blades.

Quoted for truth. Couldn't care less. I'll take a scratched to **** blade that's been reprofiled to a thinner edge angle over a shiny, fresh, factory edged blade 10/10 times.

Plus, wear tells it's own story. Used knives are a lot more interesting to look at photos of.

Dropped my native lightweight s110v tonight and broke the apex off the tip. The rest of the blade is fine. Bummer but now I can use it like I stole it.

If I see a well used/scratched knife, then generally the person knows how to use it and I find if you watch them, the knife is an extension of their arm/hand. I'm like that with my Endura 1.

It's simple math: if you want less scratches, you need more knives :)

Bingo! I was bummed after slicing some cardboard for the recycling bin with my Hap40 Delica Pakkawood, and noticed a bunch of fine scratches. Now that's no longer pristine and has developed a patina at the laminate line, it's become my favorite slicer and gives it an old school feel to the knife with some character. Absolutely love that knife.

Yes, stonewashed blades "reduce" the scratched appearance. I've always liked that "industrial" look.
Of course Spyderco has produced only a few. (Techno , S Bowie, Southard) ??

The Manix 2 in the middle looks mirror polished to me. Did you mean to type stonewashed for that one?
