Vivi, is that you doing the video?

Regardless, quite enjoyable. And one of these is in the mail heading this way -- I ought to see it soon, depending on what the holiday does to mail.

Overall, watching the video, this does not look at all like an impractical huge knife. I think it will suit me "just fine"!!

Yep. I agree with you on the size. My Voyager XL feels a little large and impractical to EDC, but the Police has never felt that way to me.

Gotta angle my camera a little lower next time. I might do a few more short videos like this, I had fun putting it together.

Big fan of the 3 and didnt think, Idd replace it but the 4 sounds nice.

As for your girlfriends brush, thats not usually something divulged in knfe tests ;)
Remind me to not buy a used knife from you :D
IM KIDDING😊

You might want to word that in a different way...

....Edit; and I notice you just did :)

Thanx Vivi. Very nice....to experience...and to watch you have the experience.

A little Police history might be fun:

We introduced the "Marirner" model in '82. (The name of the Mariner was eventually changed to Rescue). Really the first push at a serrated pocket knife for everyday carry. It took a few years to refine the serrations to where I wanted them, but all in all it was a big leap. We were already pro LEO's, Fire & Rescue, and the teeth would bite through stuff that even sharp plain edges had a hard time cutting. Law Enforcement came to us and asked for a Mariner model, but with a point. My preference was for a 4.0" blade so that's where I began the design. I took the straight edge of the Mariner, added a point, added a sharp edge on the spine for the first 3/4" of an inch, "Dagger ground" through the center for a sharp strong point. then I wrapped the handle around the blade, covering the sharp tip on the spine with the handle, so the exposed sharp edge was covered , and tried to make it as ergonomic, yet as slim as possible and still be very high effective performance. The design took quite a while.

Finally, my perfect pocket knife....for me. I thought about calling it "LaSalle", but decided that was too egocentric and opted to call it the "P.I.G" instead. (Pride Integrity Guts). We made 2400 pieces before we changed the name, due to complaints from non Police customers. The first 1200 pieces had to go back because they defeated on the spine tap test (Yes, we spine tapped back in the early 80's) and they had to be remade. We made both right and left handle models with the lefty being the reverse of the right handed version.

Now the Police 4 is the latest and it's really a design for me, all restraint aside. It's my preferred carry most of the time, but I have to be more careful as it's blade size in not appreciated by some, though it carries like a smaller knife.

Just an FYI.

All of this insight and history is appreciated. I remember you having said something like this before, -- about the Police 4 being "just for you" and it is quite timely for me to hear this again with the knife on the way. All this will be firmly in mind when I get the knife out of the box on Tuesday or whenever it arrives. It will be special to be carrying "Sal's knife". I look forward to it.

Thanks Sal! I always love hearing the history and story behind various designs. I’m sure I’m not the only one!

Thanks for sharing that bit of history Sal. It's always nice to get a peek into the designer's mind and see what all went into the making of a knife.

The Police 4 is definitely on my current wish list.

Sal, was the blade steel choice on the Police 4 also your personal preference, or was there another steel you would have preferred?

Hi Conner,

I wanted K390, the wider blade, larger hole and full flat grind. I also made slight adjustments to the handle. 30 years using the models helps with refinements. It was a real PITA for the maker, but we both persisted until achieved. It's more expensive. That's one of the reasons for the FRN version. different steels available and still lower costs. VG-10, ZDP, K390 and I'm considering a serrated edge.

Almost bought one. I definitely wanted the K390 Police 4 the most. But, I just bought a Military S110V Blurple instead, which will be arriving this coming week in the snail mail. I’m curious to see how I like these longer bladed Spyderco’s. I think a PM2 is about as small as I’d go these days.

Anyways the Police 4 must feel huge in the hand. Almost like a Texas toothpick lol. It sure can reach in and touch just about anything you desire in a defense situation.

Thanks for the reply Sal! The more I learn about this knife the more I want to experience it in hand.
I think I know where my next month's knife money will be going.

Hey Ladybug,

Are they legal to carry on Hawaii? Blade's over 4.0". I know Endura's are carried on Oahu, but they're under 4".

Is K390 a good steel for a Spyderedge? If not, what steel makes sense for a SE Police 4?

Hi Bill,

We'd have to test it. Some steels don't do well with teeth.

as far as i know, there is no blade length limit in hawaii. my guess is because of machetes once being a normal thing for people to carry? they’re terrified of guns, but don’t seem to care about knives unless it’s an automatic or butterfly knife. i believe both are illegal to even own in hawaii.
as far as enduras in hawaii, i carry a pacific salt iwb everywhere except work, where we have blade length restrictions. when i found out i was moving to hawaii, the pacific salt was the knife that brought me back to spyderco after 23 years of cheap knives. now my collection continues to grow. if i could have a police salt with se h1, that would be amazing (and even better if it was the g10 version).

i read somewhere that h1 is exceptional in se. ;)
